Step1:Introduction:
  
Do you often go to restaurant? One day if you find a fly in the soup, what would you do?
  
Now,Let’s listen to a few jokes.
Step2.Read and act it out.
Step3.Discuss:
  
Discuss the “Waiter-and-Customer jokes” of page 31.See if you can find out what the joke is.
Step4.More jokes:
—How can I keep the fish from smelling, Mike?
 
—Cut off their noses.
  
(动词smell 有两种词义:a. 发臭;b. 嗅,闻).
Daughter: Auntie kissed me.

other: How nice! Did you kiss her back, dear?
 
Daughter: Of course not. I kissed her face.
  
(back有两种词义:a.副词:还,极;b. 名词:背部)
Stranger:  Boy, will you direct me to the bank?
 
Boy:   I will ask for a dollar.
 
Stranger:  A dollar! That’s high pay, isn’t it?
 
Boy :   Sure ,but bank directors always get high pay.
 (director 可译作:a. 指路的人;b. 银行董事)
Peter:  Er, is that British Airways? Can you tell me how long it takes to fly from Dublin to London?
 
Booking Clerk: Just a minute, sir. . .
 
Peter:       OK. Thanks a lot. Good-bye.
 
(Just a minute.”的意思是:“稍等”。但Peter理解错了)
Diner(食客) : Waiter, I don’t like the looks of this trout(鳟鱼).
 
Waiter:    Well, if it’s looks you want, why don’t you order a goldfish?
A: Where do you wash?
 
B: In the spring.
 
A: I didn’t ask you when, I asked you where. (spring有两个词义:a. 春天;b. 泉,泉水)
—What American has the largest family?
 
—George Washington, the father of his country.
—What question can never be answered by “yes”?

I.教具  录音机、投影仪。
II.课堂教学设计
  1.教师向学生提出以下问题: 1) Do you like travelling? 2) How would you like to travel,  by train, by bus, or by air? Please give reasons. 3) Do you think children can go traveling by themselves? Why/Why not? 4) What should children do if they happen to be lost?
  2. 准备阅读课文,教师给出读前提问:1) Where were Hank and his children going? 2) How did Hank manage to inform the railway official and asked him to help his children?
  教师给学生数分钟,要求学生快速阅读课文,之后请同学回答上述问题。

Key: 1) Hank was on vacation and together with his two children they were travelling to  Bonn. 2) Hank managed to send a telephone message to the railway official and asked him to   help his children.
  3.放课文录音,学生跟读一至两遍。
  教师用投影仪打出以下statements, 要求学生判断其正误,并对错误的statements 进行修改。
  1) At the beginning of the story. Hank Stram and his two children were having dinner on the train. 2) Hank said, “I'm just going down to the dining car to get a coffee.” Here, he used “going down” because the dining car was near the last carriage of the train. 3) After Hank bought the coffee he decided to drink it there because he met another American there. 4) The train had stopped in a station for a few minutes. When it started moving again, the train divided and the front part was going to Frankfort while the other part was going to Bonn. 5) The announcement made at the station was in German. Otherwise, Hank might have realized what would happen. 6) The two children were not worried about their father's absence at all, for they had travelled a lot. 7) Hank managed to send a telephone message to the railway officials at the Bonn station, informing them the whole thing and asking them to meet his children at the station. 8) The two children were very anxious about their father after they reached the hotel. 9) Hank didn't arrive in Bonn until after eleven o'clock at night. 10) The two children didn't realize that their father had been anxious about them. They thought they had lost their father.

  Role 2: Suppose you were the railway official. Tell the story in your own words. You may begin with the following:
  One day I was on duty at the Bonn Station as usual. In the afternoon I suddenly got a telephone message from a certain Mr. Hank Stram, informing me that his two children, Tina and Max would arrive at the station without him. . .
  学生可任选其中一个角色进行准备。数分钟后,请学生在班上交流,教师予以讲评。
  5.布置作业  1)任选角色,复述课文;2)完成练习册中所安排的练习。

1.检查学生课文朗读和复述。
  
2. 教师给学生提出下列问题:Suppose you are looking for a new job. And now you are told that you are going to have an interview. Tell me what you should do as preparations.
  
1) Will you wear your best clothes? 2) Are you ready for the questions? 3) What kind of questions do you think you will be asked? 4) Do you want the manager to have a good impression on you?
  3. 准备阅读课文。教师给出读前提问:1) How did the writer go to the interview? 2)How many people were going to interview the writer and who were they?
  
教师给学生数分钟,要求学生快速阅读课文,之后请同学回答上述问题。
  
Key: 1) The writer rode her bicycle to the interview. 2) Three people were going to interview the writer: the boss of the section in which he wanted to work; a woman who was the head of the Training Department and the manager of the company.
  
4. 放课文录音,学生跟读一至两遍。教师就课文内容提问,检查学生的理解程度:1) How did the writer hear about the job? 2) What was the hardest part of getting the job for the writer? 3) Why did the yellow car suddenly stop? 4) Did anybody get hurt? 5) Was the writer late for the interview? 6) Who was the manager of the company? 7) What did the writer refer to by saying “the last time we met I did most of the talking”? 8) What adjectives can be used to describe the writer?
  
Key: 1) The writer got the news of the job through a friend of hers. 2) The interview was the hardest part for the writer. 3) The yellow car stopped suddenly because there was another car coming in the other direction. 4) Nobody was hurt. 5) No, she wasn't. 6) The manager of the company was the driver of the yellow car. 7) She referred to what she had shouted at the manager in the street. 8) Probably we may use the words: clever; honest; direct ; capable.
  
5.课堂活动
  
Suppose you were the manager, tell the story in your own words. The students may begin with the following:
  
One morning I drove my yellow car to the company as usual. Suddenly there was another car coming in the other direction. I had to brake hard and stopped. Luckily a road accident was avoided. But a young lady caught up with me and shouted at me. . .
  
数分钟后,请学生在班上交流,教师予以讲评。
