How much do you know about AIDS?

HIV is short for Human Immuno-deficiency Virus.

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.

H - Human: because this virus can only infect human beings.

V - Virus: because this living thing is a virus, which take the place of a certain part of the human cells and self-produce.

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. (后天免疫缺损综合症）

AIDS

A - Acquired: to “acquire” something is to get something, so “acquired” means that you can get infected with the disease.

I - Immune: “immune” comes from “immune system”, the system that protects our body from diseases.

D - Deficiency: if something is “deficient”,it means that it isn’t working well.

S - Syndrome: it means all the bad things that happen to your body when the immune system doesn’t work.

Task 2 Discussion

Discuss in groups of four:

1.How is HIV Transmitted? What activities allow HIV transmission ?

2.What activities don’t allow HIV transmission?

Unprotected sexual contact

Direct blood contact, including injection drug needles, blood transfusions. Mother to baby (before or during birth, or through breast milk)

2.Activities That Don’t Allow HIV Transmission

★You can’t get HIV from casual contact,such as:

shaking hands,

hugging,

a casual kiss,

using a toilet,

drinking from the same glass,

the sneezing and coughing of an person infected with HIV

Unprotected sex is a high-risk practice.

Sharing injection needles is considered a high-risk practice.

Receiving direct blood transfusions is a high-risk practice.

It is possible for an HIV-infected mother to pass the virus directly before or during birth, or through breast milk.

★We should not look down upon those living with HIV/AIDS, but help them fight fear, shame, ignorance and injustice.

2) Still, every 6 seconds someone new is infected with HIV in the world. What should we do to prevent AIDS?

Bring world attention to HIV/AIDS.

Educate people how to protect themselves against HIV every day of the year.

Strengthen health education and public awareness.

Improve the safety of blood and blood products.

Don’t take part in activities with a high risk of HIV infection.

World AIDS Day (December 1st)

Every December 1st, the world observes World AIDS Day - a day of understanding, compassion, and hope about HIV and AIDS.

The theme for the World AIDS Campaign 2004 is Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS. If it is the only thing you do for World AIDS Day, Wear the Red Ribbon on 1st December. It is the international symbol of HIV and AIDS awareness. By wearing it you are showing your love and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.
