He believes that physical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learn our looks—we are not born with them. A baby has generally informed face features. A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set the eyebrows by looking at those around-family and friends. This helps explain why the people of some areas of the United States look so much alike, new Englanders or Southerners have certain common face features that cannot be explained by genetics(遗传学). The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birth, it is learned after. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formed until well after new teeth are set. For many, this can be well into grown-ups. A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look alike. We learn our looks from those around us. This is perhaps why in a single country area where people smile more than those in other areas. In the United States, for example, the South is the part of the country where the people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York State still less. Many southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partly because people on Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia . People in largely populated areas also smile and greet each other in public less than people in small towns do. 31. Ray Birdwhistell believes that physical appearance _______. A. has much to do with culture B. has little to do with culture C. is different from place to place D. is ever changing 32. According to the passage, the final mouth shape is formed _______. A. as soon as one’s teeth are newly set B. before birth C. around 15 years old D. sometime after new teeth are set 33. Ray Birdwhistell can tell what area of the United States a person is from by _______. A. how he or she raises his or her eyebrows B. how much he or she laughs C. the way he or she talks D. what he or she likes best 34. This passage might have been taken out of a book dealing with ________. A. none of the above B. chemistry C. biology D. physics B Sam, an unemployed piano tuner, said it was only the second thing he had ever won in his life. The first thing was an Afghan blanket at a church raffle when he was 25 years old. But this was much bigger: it was $120,000! He had won the Big Cube, a state lottery game. To win, a contestant must first guess which number a spinning cube will stop on. The cube has six numbers on it: 1X, 10X, 50X, 100X, 500X, and 1000X. If he is correct, the contestant must then guess which of the two selected variables is going to be greater. So, just guessing which number appears on the cube does not guarantee that you will win any money. Sam correctly guessed 1000X, but he still had to choose between two variables. One variable was the number of cars that would run the stop sign at Hill Street and Lake Avenue in six hours. The other variable was the number of times that a teenage boy would change TV channels in a three-hour period. This was a tough decision. Finally, Sam flipped a coin. It came up heads, so Sam picked the teenager. He picked right. The stop sign was run only 76 times, but the teen clicked 120 times. Sixty-year-old Sam jumped for joy, for he had just won 1000 times 120, or $ 120,000. Sam dreamily left the lottery studio. Talking excitedly on his cellphone while crossing the street, he got hit by a little sports car. Sam is slowly getting better. He was in hospital for a month. His hospital bill was $110,000. And the insurance company for the little sports car's owner sued Sam for $9,000 worth of repairs. Also, Sam still has to pay federal taxes on his winnings. Sam doesn't play the state lottery any more. He says it's better to be unlucky. 35.When Sam won the second thing that he'd won in his life, he was ________. A.25 years old B.6 years old C.76 years old D.60 years old 36.To win the game, the contestants had to make ________ guesses. A.three B.two C.six D.four 37.Sam won the lottery because ________. A.everything has its time and that time must be watched B. he who risks nothing, gains nothing C. everything comes to him who waits D. he who laughs on Friday will weep on Sunday C Once upon a time, a man was walking on a mountain when he found an incredible cave with all kinds of treasure inside it. So he gave up his job, his home, and his friends, and spent all his time guarding the cave. He was so dedicated to it that he hardly ate or drank, and before long he fell ill. One day, when he could hardly move at all, he decided to share the treasure. He crawled into the cave to get a handful of jewels, but discovered, to his horror, that it was | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
