When I was a teenager I was in a group of students who took a trip to Pittsburgh. Being a country boy, I found it 36 just being in such a big city. While most of the students headed for the mall, then I decided to tour the streets 37 . It was almost Christmastime and the store windows were filled with 38 decorations. I bought several cinnamon sticks(肉桂棒)to ward off the 39 while walking and looking at the sights.

At some point, 40 , the stores became less and less and the bars became more and more. I realized I had crossed into a not so 41 section of town. I saw a small bus stop and decided to sit and take a rest before walking back. The bus stop and decided to sit and take a rest before walking back. Then I helped her granddaughter up while the lady slowly climbed on behind us. I pulled out my 48 cinnamon stick and gave it to the sweet girl while her grandma smiled her 49 to me. I got off the bus and looked up to the window where the little, curly-haired Child of God was waving goodbye to me. Then I started back to meet the other students a little 50 at heart if not in body. As I was 51 the corner, though, a voice called out from an alley. “Hey man ! Want to get 52 ?” I smiled and said, “No thanks. I 53 got.”

四、阅读理解

A

Having arrived, the first thing I noticed was the hanging basket on the porch. Rich with color and textures you wouldn’t think would go together, but it works. Reds, purples, gold; roses are her specialty.

Mother was always very attentive to her flowers and tried to put her hands in the dirt on a daily basis. It was a sort of healing, she said, good for the soul. It gave her time to reflect without distractions(分心)and rid herself of the day to day worries that come with being a single mother.

I didn’t realize how hard it was for her until I became a single mom myself. In dealing with all those similar pressure and experiences with my own children, I remember calling her and apologizing for having been so difficult and judging her. She listened intently and let out a soft chuckle, “I have a confession(坦白)to make,” she replied. “When I was at my wit’s end with you one day, I remember praying that you would have a child just like you !”

I had no idea at that time how strong and brave she was. Putting her wants and desires away for the sake of all that we wanted or needed. Only years after we left home did she go back to school and obtain her degree and start her own life.

I think back today and only wish I was more appreciative and less critical(挑剔的). Perhaps that could have helped make her life a little easier. Instead of feeling bitterness and resentment(愤恨), she only expressed pride in all that I have accomplished and my ability to hold on to my dreams; a strong woman she said.

Walking down the stone pathway to the backyard, I gaze upon this magnificent garden and feel at peace. I can see her sitting on the bench wrapped in her favorite quilt. The various colors of plants give testimony(证明)to all the years of comfort it provided.

Emotional abuse is a general term for types of abuse that tend to be non-physical in nature. This includes things like verbal abuse, shaming people, or forcing them to witness the abuse of another person or animal. Emotional abuse may be much more common than physical abuse, but can be just as devastating(灾难性的).[来源:Z+xx+k.Com]

When a person is emotionally abused, he is usually consistently or frequently abused. Defining the term may have as much to do with evaluating how often the abuse takes place and how severe it is. It doesn’t usually refer to the one day last month when you got mad at a kid or spouse, provided that this behavior does not continue and does not have elements of physical abuse.

A few examples of emotional abuse can include deliberate terrorization(恐吓)of a person, such as intentionally threatening violence against that person or other people. Extreme neglect or isolation, such as limiting a person’s exposure to the outside world is emotionally abusive. Constantly shaming a person, name-calling, or rejecting a person are other examples.

Though emotional abuse is not physical abuse, it is violent and it has far reaching consequences for the person abused. It can result in depression, problems with self-esteem, anxiety, poor sleep, alcoholism or drug use , and suicidality(自杀)among other things.

If you recognize that you have been emotionally abused or you feel your behavior may be abusing someone else, there are plenty of ways to get help. Start by talking with a licensed counselor who can help guide you to either changing your behavior to stop abuse, or help you recover from such abuse. If you’re to young to get to a counselor on your own, you can talk to a trusted teacher, a counselor, a family doctor to help stop this vicious(恶性的)cycle.
