Recently a debate entitled “The economy or the environment --- must we choose?” has been carried out in our school. The results are as follows. About 40% of the students hold the opinion that we should cut back on the amount of things we produce to save the environment. As we all can see, large areas of the world are damaged by industrial waste. As a result, many creatures are being wiped out. What’s worse, there are more and more people living on the earth, making the problem more complicated.

However, 60% of the people think differently, saying that the development of economy is beneficial for environmental protection. On one hand, many factories control the amount of pollution they produce. At the same time, they invest money to repair the damage they’ve caused. On the other hand, they make the best of recycled materials to reduce pollution.

As for me, I do believe a stable economy and a healthy environment can be possible at the same time. Recycling is the key to helping both sides. More effective laws should be put in place so that those illegal businessmen cannot go unpunished. Let’s work hand in hand to make this happen soon.
