Did we invent them the way we invented Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the Boogey Man who frightens little children into being good? Where do angels come from? These days, we see angels everywhere. Gift shops offer gold-and-silver angels. Angle faces are featured( 以。。。为特色) in beautiful paintings and on greeting cards. Countless books on angles fill shelves. Some even suggest how to talk to angels and how to hear their voices in return. Almost any schoolchild can describe angles. They are nearly always tall with soft shoulder-length hair and graceful flowing dresses. What really makes an angle is a pair of huge, spreading, white-featured wings. Wherever and however they appear, angles offer comfort. They smile with patience; they look lovingly on those of us whom they guard. Friends offering angle gifts are seeking to remind us that angles provide safety and peace. Angles are not a modern invention. And they may not be an invention at all. They come to us right out of the pages of the Bible, complete with their powerful wings. Angels sing to celebrate the birth of Jesus. And Jesus makes sure little children have their special guardian angels, while later on, in the garden of Gethsemance, an angle comes to comfort Jesus himself. Though no female angel appears in the Bible, there is no reason, obviously, that angles cannot take a female form. They themselves are beyond gender, and the bodies in which they appear are always made for a particular purpose and soon discarded once no longer in use. Angles are pure spirit; their natural living place is Heaven. But they always very busy on our behalf here on Earth. 21. Angel gifts are popular these days mainly because ______________. A. they can talk to children B. they are made of gold or silver C. they present safety and peace D. they are worth the value of money 22. Which of the following is True according to the passage? A. Angels always take a female form. B. Angles are invented by children. C. Angles live everywhere on Earth. D. Angles have something to do with spirit. 23. The word “discarded” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “______________” A. deserted B. delayed C. dismissed D. divided B Some colors people see late at night could cause signs of clinical depression. That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression. Doctors use the word “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide. In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠)to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night. The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light. After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water. Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep uneasiness at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim(微弱)red light, they did not.” Randy Nelson notes that photosensitive(感光)cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep-wake cycle. He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness. 24. Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because __________. A. they are similar to humans in dealing with colors B. they are easy to observe and study C. they are sensitive to colors like human beings D. they are active at night and sleep during the day 25. What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed? A. They drink less sugary water. B. They don’t sleep well. C. Their eyesight becomes worse. D. Their energy level becomes low. 26. __________ tends to cause hamsters to be depressed. A. Dim light B. Red light C. Blue light D. Darkness 27. What can help people who work late at night to avoid being depressed? A. Not being exposed to dim red light when using computers. B. Equipping their computer screens to put it more in the reddish light. C. Living or working in low levels of light overnight. D. Going to see doctors of clinical depression regularly for help. C VERA Wang, the queen of red-carpet dressing, didn’t go into the fashion business with stars in her eyes. She knew about its unglamorous (单调乏味的) side, the hard work and, especially, the risks. And she had plenty of doubts along the way.? But every time one person – and, she says, it really just takes one – figures out what she’s trying to express with a certain design, she’s reminded of the reason why she became involved in fashion, and why she’s still in it: there’s an indefinable payoff from helping a woman look and feel her best. Wang, 63, was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in June 2013 at its prestigious?awards show, often called “the Oscars of fashion”. “To all the women and men I have dressed, thank you for your trust,” she said when accepting the award from her mentor (导师) and former employer Ralph Lauren Her hit designs include the lavender (淡紫的) skirt actress Sharon Stone paired with a Gap shirt at the Oscars in 1998 and the crystal-waistband wedding gown that Chelsea Clinton wore in 2010. There’s rarely a Hollywood event or an A-list (重要的) wedding where Wang’s name doesn’t come up. Wang also has two lower-priced lines. She’s developed a fragrance business and a home goods collection. And she even has a flower bouquet business. Wang wasn’t always sure this would be her path. She studied art history at Sarah Lawrence College and was a competitive figure skater in contention for a spot on the 1968 US Olympic team. Her family wasn’t initially supportive of fashion as a career path, and although they had financial means, they didn’t back her at first. So she went to work as an editor at Vogue, and then at Ralph Lauren, before launching her company in 1990 as a bridal brand. She earned fame and respect through her hard work. Her mentor described Wang as “a unique young woman filled with a rare passion for fashion”. “In all the years since, I have watched her drive, dedication and talent shape an e | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
