Learners of English, especially self-taught learners may have trouble in understanding speeches by native speakers. The following ways might help improve their listening ability.

It happened in a certain country during World War II. A boy named John was only sixteen years old, but he wanted to fight the enemy very much. To his disappointment, he was not old enough to be a soldier. Only when a boy is eighteen can he be enlisted(入伍). Such as it stood, the boy insisted on joining the army.
