A

Do you know Finland? It is perhaps the most beautiful and mysterious country of Northern Europe. Two-thirds of its surface is covered with thick forests. Relative to (和……比起来) its size, Finland has more lakes than any other country. The northern part of this country is inside the Arctic Circle, where almost no trees can grow because of the cold weather, and the people use their deer to transport clothing and food.

Finnish history began in the Middle Ages. In about 1155, Finland was conquered by its western neighbor Sweden. It then passed into Danish hands, in the 14th century, before returning to Swedish control in 1523. During the Napoleonic Wars (1804-1818), Finland was passed finally from Sweden to Russia. The opportunity came in 1917 when the Russian Revolution brought the foreign rule of Finland to an end. The Finnish Republic was founded in 1919, shortly after Soviet Russia made peace with Germany.

The years between the First and Second World Wars were years of progress and growing development. Finland is the fifth largest country in Europe, and despite a relatively small population of 5.2 million, the market potential (潜力) is great. Finland has no coal or oil, and the nation’s wealth lies in the timber (木材) from its forests, which supplies material for paper and furniture making, and in the electric power from its water. Finland is an excellent gateway (门户) to trading with Russia and the Baltic States because of a long history of trading with these markets. Finland has also enjoyed a strong and longstanding trading relationship with Britain, a relationship which was further strengthened by Finland’s accession (正式加入) to the European Union in January 1995.

56.According to the passage, we know that Finland _____.

A.lies inside the Arctic Circle B.has a large population

C.lies to the east of Sweden D.seldom trades with other countries

People these days are often unhappy with the TV programs on buses and the TV advertisements at train stations. So, this week, a group of anti-TV activists in North America and Britain plan to liberate (解放) the TV sufferers.

Their weapon? A new invention called TV-B-Gone. It is a key-ring-sized remote control unit that can turn off most TV sets within a radius (半径) of around 14 meters.

This annual protest is against TV’s influence (especially in Turning-Off TV Week). It’s called White Dot and began in the US 12 years ago. It has by now spread to other countries, including Canada and the UK.

“For most people, TV has become an activity they don’t think about. If you’re not doing anything else, you tend to watch TV,” said David Burke, the founder of the UK arm of White Dot which is organizing the protest in Europe.

The protesters plan to identify (确认) restaurants, pubs and other public places which they believe are ruined by a television. They will then pay each one a visit and forcibly (强行地) turn off the TV sets. They will leave behind posters explaining how the background noise of the TV has replaced the art of conversation.

Mitch Altman, who spent two years inventing the TV-B-Gone in San Francisco, California, said he came up with the idea on a night out with his friends. Typically, the group stared at a television in the corner of the restaurant and he determined to do something about it.

In the US, the movement has gained great success over the past 10 years. Groups visit schools and colleges to encourage students to take part.

A. Anti-TV activists are against TV news.

B.TV advertisements in public places anger people a lot.

C.White Dot invited Mitch Altman to invent the TV-B-Gone.

D.Protesters will persuade restaurant owners to turn off their TV sets.

61.The underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refers to “_____”.

A.TV-B-Gone B.White Dot C.TV’s influence D.Turning-Off TV Week

62.We can learn from the passage that White Dot is a(n) _____.

A.website operated by anti-TV activists

B.newspaper calling on people to stay away from bad TV programs

C.government department in charge of TV programs

D.organization fighting against TV’s bad influence

63. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is to _____.

A.discuss the disadvantages of TV ads

B.show how people become slaves of TV

We know the famous ones—the Thomas Edisons and the Alexander Graham Bells?—but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper(雨刮器)?Shouldn’t we know who they are?

Joan Mclean thinks so. In fact, Mclean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she’s developed a course on the topic. In addition to learning “who”invented “what”, however, Mclean also likes her students to learn the answers to the “why” and “how” questions. According to Mclean, “When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try.”

So, just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well, Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to Mew York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights, so she jumped aboard a streetcar. Noticing that th
