On a freezing cold day, a couple had to move into a small apartment because of their failure in business. The husband worked day and night to support the family but with no care of his wife. So she thought, “He doesn't love me any more. He just cares about his business ...not me”.

One day, she was about to take a shower when he stopped her at the door, “Let me take it first, okay?”“Why not me first?” she asked. “I am tired, honey, you take it later, okay?”She was entirely unhappy.

One day, she found nothing to do and turned on his computer. A few words came into her sight. Reading them, she burst into tears. It was his diary:

Today, I was quite sad. She asked me why I was always taking the shower first, and I said to her, “I was exhausted”. She was unhappy. In her mind, I treated her not as well as usual, but what could I do? I was not as rich as before! We moved to the small apartment, and there was only one shower in the bathroom. It was so cold to take a shower in such a cold winter. But I found that if one person took the shower first, the room could get a little warmer. So every day I rushed to the bathroom first. I was thinking that, when she took the shower, the room would get warmer, even if it was only 1℃.

Now I cannot give her a comfortable life, take her to good restaurants, or buy expensive dresses for her, but at least, I can give her 1℃ love.

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑).

Students are increasingly using laptops for notetaking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.

Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes “mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said.

In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual notetaking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.

The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.

The researchers' report said, “While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.”

In another experiment aimed at testing longterm memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.

These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

C. get higher scores D. understand lectures better

Who is your role model? Normally the answer to this question would be anyone around you who you find truly inspiring. It could also be someone like J.K. Rowling or Martin Luther King Jr. who has proven to be strong and intelligent person.

However, in today’s world, stars are regarded as role models along with the heroes listed above, despite their intentions or actions. Teens attempt to imitate their actions for two major reasons. First, to be fashionable and accepted by popular culture, and second, because stars’ actions are so well documented by the media that it seems to grab our attention. Much of the reports about stars is shocking and exhibits bad morals or lifestyles that aren’t right for teenagers. In addition, almost everything stars do is described beyond truth to make a shocking story by taking it to the next level.

However, teens must take responsibility for their actions. We can’t always blame stars for influencing us. Only you have control over yourself and only you choose to do something. Our bodies and actions are in the hands of no one else.

Now, who ever said stars are role models? Whether they choose to be or not, stars set examples as soon as they step into the spotlight. With reporters following and recording every move they make, it is impossible not to be watched and then be imitated. These people influence teens whether or not they want to. Why someone who doesn’t want to be setting an example set one? So, should we look up to them or the people who are true and good role models? It’s our responsibility as teens to know right from wrong, and it’s time for us to take responsibility for our actions. In doing so, we will learn toward those inspiring people that want to be setting example, and follow in their steps like them.

9.The teens like to imitate stars in order to ???????.

A .know more about stars’ stories B. be accepted by the society

C. be reported by the media D. become more fashionable

10.According to the author, the role the media play in setting example to teenagers is ??????.

A. reasonable B. inspiring C. positive D. negative

11.The author writes the passage mainly to advise the teenagers to ??????.

A. keep a balance between study and entertainment

B. be responsible for their own choices and behaviors

C. follow fashionable stars’ steps to be more popular

D. choose their role models through different reports

12.What the underlined phrase “step into the spotlight” mean in the fourth paragraph?

A. enter a place with a spotlight. B. get the attention of the media.

C. lose interest in the media. D. react properly to the media.

The Doll and the White Rose

I was walking around in a mall, when I saw a cashier(出纳员) hand this little boy some money back. The cashier said, "I'm sorry, but you don't have enough money to buy this doll.”The little boy seemed very disappointed.

I walked toward him and asked him who he wished to give this doll to."It's the doll that my sister wanted so much for Christmas. She was sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her: But Santa Claus can't bring it to her where she is now.I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there."His eyes were so sad."My sister has gone to be with God.Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister.”

My heart nearly stopped. The little boy looked up at me and continued, "I told Daddy to tell Mommy not to go yet.I need her to wait until I come back from the mall."

I quickly reached for my wallet and said," Suppose we check again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll."

"OK, I hope I do have enough," he said.I put some of my money with his without him seeing and we started to count it.There was enough for the doll and even some spare money.

Surprisingly, the little boy cried, "Thank you God for giving me enough money!" Then he looked at me and added, "I asked last night before I went to sleep for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that Mommy could give it to my sister. He heard me! I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but I didn't dare to ask God for too much. But he gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose ! "

Then I remembered two days before a local newspaper reported an accident in which a woman and a little girl were badly injured. The little girl died right away, and the mother was left in a critical state. Was this the family of the little boy?

Two days after I met the little boy, I read in the newspaper that the woman had passed away.I couldn't stop myself from going to the funeral.Teary-eyed, I felt that my life had been changed forever.

13.The boy wanted to buy the doll because .
