Has anyone noticed how, with the passage of time, one’s relationship with one’s grown-up daughters and sons becomes changed? I’ve been aware of this for some time but I’m not quite sure how to deal with it.

Take the kitchen sink for example.

Following a family get-together at my place, I walked into the kitchen to find Kate, my daughter carefully cleaning the sink.

“Don’t do that; what are you doing that for?” I said, unhappy about the hidden criticism.

“Mum,” she said, “you really ought to put your glasses on when you clean the sink. Behind the tap here was black!”

But it’s just things like kitchen sinks. Another time Kate arrived to pick me up to lunch. She looked at me and then asked, “Mum, why do you use brown eyebrow pencil when your hair is grey?”

A sudden memory of her, aged 14, going to her first mixed party flooded back. She had come in to say goodbye. For a moment I thought she’d been an accident. Both eyes were black. I remember suggesting that perhaps a little less eye make-up might be more effective.

Now I told her, “My hair used to be brown.”

“It looks absurd.”

“Mrs. Menzies had dark eyebrows with grey hair.”

“Yes, but you’re not Mrs. Menzies, are you?” she said triumphantly, as if that proved her point.

But a recent event make me realize that something really must be done.

She had returned some for a few weeks before getting married. One evening I went out on a dinner date. By the time my companion left me at the front door, it was about 2am. As I stepped in, an angry figure in a white nightgown stopped me.

“Well, what time of night is this to be coming home?” she shouted. “Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick!”

Foreign Students in the United States and Canada

There are many nonnative speakers of English at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Nonnatives are usually foreign students or resident aliens. Foreign students in the United States are nonresidents with F or J visas. Resident aliens are immigrants or refugees. In addition, some U.S. and Canadian citizens are nonnative speakers. They do not speak English as their first language.

California is the state with the most foreign students. Texas and New York are next. Other states with large numbers of foreign students are Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Students from Europe most often attend school in the northeastern or northwestern states, and students from Asia usually go to school in the Midwestern and western states. Latin Americans most often study in the South and Southwest. And Africans usually attend school in the Midwest and Sough. In Canada, many nonnative speakers study in Quebec and speak French. Some go to school in the provinces of Ontario, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, and Alberta.

Engineering is the most popular field of study for visa students. Many study management and business. Most foreign students major in practical subjects.

Many visa students in the United States come from the Middle East and Asia, and many are from oil countries. Iran, Nigeria, Japan, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, China, India and Thailand send large numbers of students to the United States. Blowing their Tops

The eruption of Mount St. Helens, in the state of Washington, is only the latest in a long line

of spectacular volcanic eruptions （喷发）that have occurred over the past hundred years. Let’s look at previous eruptions. In 1902, Mount Pelee in Martinique exploded, shooting out a huge cloud of burning gas and ashes that killed the 30,000 citizens of St. Pierre. An 1883 eruption, which blew the top off the island of Krakatoa, near Sumatra, created a tidal wave in the sea that killed 36,000 people. When Mount Bezumyannaya erupted in Siberia in 1956, it spit out 2.4 billion tons of rock --- enough debris to bury the city of Paris. Although its ashes were carried over 250 miles, no one was killed, because the volcano was in a remote area.

In February of 1943, near the Mexican village of Paricutin, a man watched a volcano emerge in his cornfield. Dionisio Pulido was working in his field when a small crack in the ground began to expand and the earth started to shake. The stunned farmer watched until the danger forced him to leave. Out of the rift poured a cloud of smoke and sparks so large that at night it created a fireworks display that was visible for over fifty miles. By late March, the cloud had grown to a 20,000-foot column of smoke that
