As we enjoy the summer ocean waves along the beaches, we may think nervously about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the great fear that sharks inspire in us. Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem.

Sharks, in particular, are “in” these days. Thanks to good public policy and famous stars such as Jackie Chan and Ang Lee, killing sharks for fin soup is no longer cool.

The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to?reverse?the trend, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.

In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations.

Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.?

Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing marine life.

Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks for luxurygoods has become a full-scale war. The decrease of African elephant populations is alarming. Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.?

21. The underlined word “reverse” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.

A. show B. keep C. follow D. change

22. From the passage, we know ________.

A. Jackie Chan and Ang Lee make fin soup popular

B. a lot of wild animals have been killed for products

C. Steven Spielberg's Jaws inspires us to protect sharks

D. the number of African elephants has been increased

23. What can we infer from the passage?

A. More animals for high-end products will be saved.

B. People have kicked the habit of having shark fin soup.

C. Shark fins will not be available any more in restaurants.

D. Global efforts have succeeded in stopping killing wild animals.

B

Parents who want their kids to succeed more than anything are now being sold a high-tech solution. Class 120 is $199-a-year smart phone app that tracks your teenager and alerts you if the kid isn’t in the scheduled class.

Is it a good idea for parents to track whether their young adults are in class? In short: No, this is a terrible idea.

One of the fundamental purposes of a college is learning to be an independent student and person. That means learning how to do what needs to be done, whether one particularly feels like doing it or not.

It’s easy to see how parents get themselves into a situation where tracking their kids makes sense. A students is admitted to college by a process that focuses primarily on grads, courses taken and admission test scores. Monitoring grades and scores is easy. The parents may think that: “Our child is succeeding. We are happy.” But grades and scores can’t tell everything. They don’t take into account whether that kid is ready for the responsibility of college—whether they have the strength of self-discipline, maturity and the skill needed to care for himself or herself.

Monitoring the development of character is much harder for parents. Character growth happens through encountering and learning to cope with disappointments and failures. You never know which problem will be the point for growth.

However, letting kids fail can be really difficult for anxious parents. They believe that success means being perfect and never failing. The truth is that kids need to learn to fail.

College is an ideal place to practice adult responsibility and independence. Students need to make their own decisions about whether to get out of bed and go to work in the morning.

Maybe your child hasn’t learned this lesson by now, but he has to learn it sometime. An alarm clock’s job is to wake you up but it does not provide a reason.

24. Which of the following is one of the basic purposes of a college?

A. Getting the highest grades B. Gaining the most awards

C. Learning to be an independent person D. Finding the best job

25. According to the parents,_____.

A. children’s failure is acceptable

B. children’s safety is the most important

C. being perfect and successful is the most important

D. happiness is the most important

26. What makes the character growth happen according to the passage?

A. Successful study B. Learning how to deal with failures

C. Communication with teachers D. Making new friends

27. What’s the author’s attitude to ward monitoring their children’s school performance?

A. It is not a good idea

B. It is a good way to make the children perfect

C. It is not shown in the passage

D. The author is indifferent about it.

My grandmother Adele loved culture and was generous with its gifts. When I was a child, she took me tomuseums, restaurants, dances. She showered me with gifts from her travels around the world. But I can only remember her giving me one book—a book that, to this day, I have not read. She presented me with her own favorite childhood book: Hans Brinker. My grandmother was happy to share this book with me. She even decorated the title page with her proud writing.

I tried to read it. I adored reading, and would dive into a new pile of books from the library all at once. But something about Hans Brinker just wouldn’t let me in. The story was set in Holland, a long time ago. It felt dull and unfamiliar—even though I was a fan of classics of other times and places. I simply read the first pages over and over. I could not progress.

Standing on a bookshelf in our living room, the book was like something I avoided. It scolded me for not being interested, for not trying hard enough, for disappointing my grandmother.

The book started to fit in, almost forgotten, until Adele asked. Had I read it? Did I like it? Always determined, she wanted to know the answer. I would make some kind of excuse, feel bad, and open it again, hoping for a new reaction.?The book weighed on me.

Years passed and finally Adele and I both accepted that I would never read Hans Brinker. Eventually I cleared the book from the shelf. The Hans Brinker experience led me to set a rule that I’ve lived by ever since: Do not ask about a book given as a gift. Don’t ask, despite your desire to discuss it to grow closer. The desire for such connection is what gives book-giving with special meaning—and increases the owner’s possibility to be a letdown.

Guilt is basically the same as for all gifts, though. If the giver doesn’t have the pleasure of seeing or hearing about t
