A historic event involving China and Taiwan will take place today, Saturday, November 7th. Chinese president Xi Jinping and Taiwan president Ma Ying-Jeou will meet for discussions in Singapore. It is the first summit at presidential level to take place between China and Taiwan since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.

Taiwan is just 180 km from China but their relations have remained cautious and, at times, frosty for decades. China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and therefore does not regard it as a separate nation. Only 22 foreign governments recognise Taiwan as an independent country. The status of Taiwan is one of the more difficult problems in international politics to find a solution to.

The meeting between the two leaders is a major stepping stone to repair decades-old divisions. It could pave the way for similar meetings in the future. Special etiquette(礼节) is already in place for the milestone encounter. The two parties have decided not to use the term "president" to address each other. Instead, they will use the word "mister". Further, the two leaders will not sign any agreements. Neither will they issue any joint statements or hold a joint press conference.

A Chinese official said the meeting is to, "exchange views on promoting the peaceful development of the relations". A spokesman for Mr Ma said the talks, "aim to solidify relations between the two sides and keep the status quo".

24.What does the underlined word”frosty” mean in paragraph 2?

A. grey B. freezing cold C. cold atmosphere D. cautious relations

25. Why is the status of Taiwan is one of the more difficult problems in international politics ?

A. Because Taiwan is far away from China

B. Because only China regards Taiwan as part of our nation

C. Because the relations between China and Taiwan will remain cautious

D.Because only a very small number of foreign governments regard Taiwan as a separate nation

26. What is the purpose of the meeting between the two leaders?

A. to discuss some agreements

B. to change solution form of address

C. to strengthen relations between the two sides and keep the current situation

D. to establish a stepping stone so that the two sides will give a press conference

27. What could take place in the future?

A. more meetings B. a banquet C. a festival D. trade talks

Many schools across the U.S. hold graduation ceremonies this time of year. In some schools, even 5 and 6-year-olds observe their graduation from kindergarten. And so can older people, much older. Jerry Reid, 70-year-old, just graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He earned a bachelor's degree.

Mr. Reid might not look like the average college student. His hair is definitely grayer. But still Jerry Reid's age is easy to forget, other UVA students know him as one of their own.

Mr. Reid joined the "Hoo Crew," a group that cheers loudly for the school at sports events. He also joined a fraternity, a men's group on campus. He sang drinking songs along with many other students. Mr. Reid's school friends say they can talk to him about just anything.

About a half century ago, in his 20s, Mr. Reid was not in school. Instead, he was racing cars and chasing girls. But he says his friend Bill invited him to UVA parties.

"Bill Sturman told me what a screw-up(糊涂的人) I was that there was no way I'd ever make anything out of my life unless I came up here and went to school with him," said Reid.

UVA Professor Luke Wright says Mr. Reid influences students. The teacher says Mr. Reid showed them that life does not end at 40. Instead, the 70-year-old college graduate believes that getting older can be the beginning of a dream.
