Ferdinand Puentes and eight others, including the pilot, were aboard the Makana Kai Air Cessna when its engine broke down on Dec.11, 2013 and one person was killed. “Alarms and bells” started to sound on the plane, Puentes, who is a Hawaiian native told the reporter, and he turned on his camera, recording the dangerous scene. “I had to make sure it was on,” the 39-year-old added that he had two cameras and he had intended to record the take-off. In images released later, Puentes is seen climbing onto a wing of the aircraft. Another image shows other passengers holding on to plane debris (残骸) to stay afloat. “It was so many things just happening. Is it for real? Is this really happening?” he said. But even with the complete shock of the crash, Puentes turned the camera on himself. In a bright yellow life preserver, in the Pacific Ocean, holding onto a seat cushion, he took a selfie, the tail of the sinking aircraft behind him. According to the report, Puentes was in his work gear. “My steel-toed boots, my heavy work jeans and my long sleeve shirt, it was pretty hard and exhausting to swim with all that,” he said. In Puentes’ video released to ABC News, the alarm sounds aboard the plane as it crash-lands into the water. Passengers can be seen putting on life-preservers as water begins to pour in. They calmly exit the aircraft. 21. According to the first two paragraphs, ______. A. the reason why the plane crashed was not known B. there are nine people in all in the plane C. A. excited B. confused C. doubtful D. discouraged 23. According to the text, _______. A. All the people aboard the plane survived the crash B. Puentes took a selfie in front of the sinking aircraft C. Puentes swam to the shore after the crash D. The passengers got out of the crashed plane nervously 24. The underlined word “gear” in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by “ ______”. A. hat B. shoes C. tie D. suit B Just before summer, a serious accident occurred on U.S. Highway 31, killing a man driving a motorcycle. It’s reported that a car driven by a teenager traveling north changed direction across the highway and struck a motorcycle rider traveling south. The rider, Jay Kendall, served as postmaster and owned a local business. Immediate reports stated the use of a cell phone was the reason for the deadly accident. The death of Kendall led to a rally (集会) organized by Kendall’s wife aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of texting and driving. The dangers are very real. Police officers across the country have witnessed many texting-related accidents. The attention it takes to read or write a text while driving is just enough time to turn off the road or into the path of another vehicle. The results are often deadly. Yet, motorists continue to grasp their cell phones while they drive. Laws concerning texting and driving are weak. In Alabama, very little punishment faces an offender (违法者). For officers, spotting a driver texting can be difficult, but it’s certainly not impossible. Motorists who avoid texting behind the wheel often report seeing multiple drivers texting while speeding along a highway or city street. Many reasonable people agree that texting and driving is dangerous, but they also find themselves reading a message while driving. Education would be helpful in convincing people to leave their phones alone while they drive. But even more effective would be laws that bite when offenses are recorded. Years ago, lawmakers were hesitant to toughen laws concerning driving while under the influence of alcohol (酒). Increasing accidents on the highways finally convinced lawmakers to make the laws more effective. The same tough approach is needed for texting and driving. Evidence of the deadlines of such risky behavior has become all too clear. 25. How did the traffic accident on U.S. Highway 31 happen? A. The car driver wasn’t skilled. B. The car driver wasn’t paying attention. C. The motorcyclist was using a cell phone. D. The motorcyclist changed direction suddenly. 26. Why is it hard to put an end to texting and driving? A. Few people are aware of the problem. B. There are no laws against texting and driving. C. Punishment for texting and driving is mild. D. It’s difficult for police officers to find offenders. 27. In the author’s opinion, to stop texting and driving by education seems _______. A. helpless B. slow C. costly D. troublesome 28. The author mentions laws concerning drinking and driving to show that _______. A. tough laws are necessary B. texting and driving is risky C. lawmakers are irresponsible D. drivers behave badly these days C The 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature went to the French novelist “for the art memory” with which he has “uncovered the life-world of the occupation”. Although the 69-year-old writer is a very popular literary figure in?France, he is little known elsewhere. So who is this Patrick Modiano, why does his memory have such an influence upon him, and what exactly has he uncovered? Modiano was born in a suburb of Paris right after World War II ended in Europe in July 1945. His father was a Jewish-Italian businessman who met his Belgian actress mother during the Nazi occupation of Paris. As The New Yorker magazine put it, Europeans born in 1945 share a condition—They escaped the war,??but “not the taint(污点)of the war”. Modiano’s life has been influenced by Nazi Germany’s occupation during the war, and his family’s connections to it. According to New York-based newspaper Forward, his father survived the war dishonorably. When Paris’ Jews were brought together to be sent to concentration camps, the businessman did not join them but spent the time making money from deals with Nazis on the black market. “The novelist has a duty to record the lives of the people who have disappeared, the people who were made to disappear,” French writer Clemence Boulouque, also an expert in Jewish studies, told The New Yorker magazine. In his more than three dozen novels, Modiano has returned again and again to the same themes: Jadishness, the Nazi occupation, and loss of identity. His characters collect pieces of old evidence, handwriting, photographs, police files, and newspaper cuttings | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
