Though old and blind, Mrs. Hammond did everything for herself. She even used to go for a walk alone every evening, and found her way by touching things with her stick. She has never lost her way.

But one day some men came and cut down some of the familiar trees at the side of one of the paths which she followed. When she reached that place, she was in difficulties.

She stopped and listened, but she did not hear any other people, so she went ahead, and then heard the sound of water.

“Water?” she said aloud. “I must be on a bridge, and there must be a river under me. How can I get back to my home from here?”

At that moment she heard a man’s voice near her, which said, “Excuse me, can I help you?”
