Not wanting to keep the superstar waiting, I arrived at nine, 20 minutes early. As I was catching up on e-mails, Selena quietly scooted into the seat next to me. No bodyguard. Not even a drop of makeup. She was ten minutes early and so inconspicuous(不显眼的) that no one else in the restaurant looked up so much. Selena was wearing Bebe shorts. She had a baby face and ordered a hot chocolate. After making small talk about what she wore for the shoot, she dived into the subject of her career. Selena declared 2012 the year of movies. She filmed three: Spring Breakers, a drama; The Getaway, an action flick; and Hotel Transylvania, a comedy. Each is a marked move away from the teen style that made her a household name. Now that her Disney days are behind her, Selena is at that unstable point in a child star’s career where she is trying to grow up---both as a person(she turned 20 in July)and as an artist. “Being part of the Disney Channel was such a blessing, and I’m super happy with what my show accomplished, but acting is something I would like to take on more seriously.” She continued, “I don’t necessarily feel accomplished. I want to creat a whole different persona when it comes to acting.” Selena has been working fulltime since she was seven years old and scored a role on Barney&Friends. In 2007, when she was offered the lead in Wizards of Waverly Place, Selena, her mother, and her stepfather uprooted from Grand Prairie, Texas, to LA, where they are settling now. 21. When was it that Selena arrived at the low-key coffee shop? A. At ten. B. At ten to nine. C. At ten past nine. D. At thirty past nine. 22. Which of the following statements is true according to the second paragraph? A. Selena went into her film career as soon as we met in the coffee shop. B. Three famous films filmed in 2012 have shown her teen style. C. The film Hotel Transylvania is an action flick filmed in 2012 D. Each of the three films symbolizes that Selena’s performance varies from her teen style. 23. How did Selena think of Disney days which were behind her? A. She thought of playing in Disney a blessing. B. She didn’t feel very satisfied with her show in Disney. C. She found her not accomplished in her performance in Disney. D. She believed her being part in Disney Channel a blessing. 24. The underlined word in the last paragraph probably means “ _______”. A. moved B. picked C. changed D. removed B Sixteen years ago, Eileen Doyle’s husband, an engineer, took his four children up for an early morning cup of tea, packed a small case and was never seen or heard from again. Eileen was astonished and in a state of despair. They had been a happy family and, as far as she knew, there had been nothing wrong with their marriage. Every day of the year a small group of men and women quietly pack a few belongings and, without so much as a note or a good-bye, close the front door for the last time, leaving their debts, their worries and their confused families behind them. Last year, more than 1,200 men and nearly as many women were reported missing from home — the highest in 15 years. Many did return home within a year, but others rejected the past completely and are now living a new life somewhere under a different identity. To those left behind this form of desertion is a terrible blow to their pride and self-confidence. Even the finality of death might be preferable. At least it does not imply rejection or failure. Worse than that, people can be left with an unfinished marriage, not knowing whether they will have to wait seven years before they are free to start a fresh life. Clinical psychologist Paul Brown believes most departures of this kind to be well planned rather than impulsive. “It’s typical of the kind of personality which seems able to ignore other people’s pain and difficulties. Running away, like killing yourself, is a highly aggressive act. By creating an absence the people left behind feel guilty, upset and empty.” 25. According to the passage, those people left their families behind for the following reasons except_________. A. they couldn’t bear their spouse (配偶) B. they were afraid of the burden of debts C. they wanted to forget the past completely D. they wanted to start a new life somewhere else 26. The man or woman left behind with an unfinished marriage usually ________. A. admits their responsibility for the situation B. feels embarrassed and useless C. will have no legal marriage life for seven years D. wishes the person who has left were dead 27. Some people would even prefer the death to the running away of their spouse because ________. A. their spouse would feel greatly relieved B. their spouse would feel no pain during the death C. their spouse’s death would contribute to them starting a fresh life D. their spouse’s death would not bring a feeling of rejection or failure 28. What’s the author’s attitude towards the departures of this kind? A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Positive. C We regularly hear how important consumer spending is for the economy. The story goes like this:the more consumers spend, the more money circulates in the economy, which contributes to healthy job growth and profits. Keynes, a British economist, went as far as to say that individuals saving their money may actually be hurting the economy. Sounds troubling, doesn’t it? Fear not. You aren’t actually hurting anyone else by saving money. Strong economic growth only comes from one place:savings. Not consumption. In fact, economic activity should not be mistaken for economic growth. For example, somebody takes their money, walks into a store, and purchases goods. The store increases its revenue. But what happens to all of those goods and services that people have chosen not to consume by saving their money? Simple:Other people are allowed to consume them. Think of it this way:When you lend out your savings, you are actually saying,“Here, I am not going to consume right now, so why don’t you?” Banks simply play the middleman:they collect lots of people’s savings and then lend out lots of funds. It takes an unbelievable amount of goods and services to construct a building. It takes food, shelter, and entertainment for all of the workers, as well. Without savings,it is quite impossible to finance such a construction. The coordination(协调)between savings and consumption is a necessary basis for sound economic growth. This coordination is also why consumer lending (say , to borrow a big sum of money to buy a car) is not productive,in a strict sense. It doe | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
