They believed there could be genetic evidence which explains why fat people are often happier than their skinny friends. The breakthrough could be an explanation for why fat characters, such as The Laughing Policeman and Father Christmas are often portrayed as joyful and kindly. FTO is the major genetic contributor to obesity. But it is also associated with an eight percent reduction in the risk of depression. Researchers at McMaster University in Canada had been investigating whether there was a link between obesity and depression. They found the opposite was true. The study analyzed 17,200 DNA samples from participants in 21 countries. Results showed people with FTO gene—the fat gene—showed significantly less signs of depression. This finding was confirmed by analyzing in three additional international studies. Professor David Meyre said, “ We set out to follow a different path, starting from the assumption that both depression and obesity deal with brain activity. We thought that obesity genes may be linked to depression. The difference of eight percent is not very obvious. But, we have discovered a molecular(分子的)basis for depression. It is the first evidence that an FTO obesity gene is associated with protection against major depression. In a recent interview, actress Lisa Riley said she was more than comfortable with her size. She said she is a “big, really happy” girl who is lucky enough to be confident in her own skin, and added, “Many people want to be thinner. Not me.” “I genuinely love being different and it drives me mad that people don’t believe I’m happy with what I am.” 41. What does the underlined word “skinny” in Paragragh 1 probably mean? A. A gene that contributes to depression. D. A kind of DNA sample from participants. 43. According to what Professor David Meyre said, we can know ____. A. his former assumptions were right B. obesity genes are linked to depression C. there should be more people involved in the study D. there was no evidence for the role of an FTO obesity gene before 44.
