The Man of Many Secrets — Harry Houdini — was one of the greatest American entertainers in the theater this century. He was a man famous for his escapes — from prison cells, from wooden boxes floating in rivers, from locked tanks full of water. He appeared in theaters all over Europe and America. Crowds came to see the great Houdini and his “magic” tricks.

Of course, his secret was not magic or supernatural powers. It was simply strength. He had the ability to move his toes as well as he moved his fingers. He could move his body into almost any position he wanted.

Houdini started working in the entertainment world when he was 17, in 1891. He and his brother Theo performed card tricks in club in New York. They called themselves the Houdini Brothers. When Harry married in 1894, he and his wife Bess worked together as magician and assistant. But for a long time they were not very successful. Then Harry performed his first prison escape, in Chicago in 1898. Harry persuaded a detective to let him try to escape from the prison, and he invited the local newspapermen to watch.

It was the publicity that came from this that started Harry Houdini’s success. Harry had fingers trained to escape from handcuffs and toes trained to escape ankle chins. But his biggest secret was how he unlocked the prison doors. Every time he went into the prison cell, Bess gave him a kiss for good luck — and a small skeleton key, which is a key that fits many locks, pass quickly from her mouth to his.

Harry used these prison escapes to build his fame. He arranged to escape from the local prison of every town he visited. In the afternoon, the people of the town would read about it in their local newspapers, and in the evening every seat in the local theater would be full. What was the result? World-wide fame and a name remembered today.

22. In the fourth paragraph, the underlined word “this” refers to _______.

23. From the passage we can infer that Houdini became famous _______.

A. in 1894 B. before he married

C. at the age of 17 D. when he was about 24

24. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. A Skeleton Key B. A Man of Many Secrets

C. World-wide Fame D. Great Escape

The time of year a baby is born can shape what profession they will embark on in later life, a new study has suggested. Being born in a certain month appears to indicate the possibility of what job a person will end up with, the study by the Office for National Statistics found.

Researchers have uncovered that the month in which babies are born could also affect everything from intelligence to length of life. A child born in December is more likely to become a dentist while someone whose birthday falls in January will tend to a debt collector, they found.

A February birth appears to increase the chances of being an artist while March babies appear to go on to become pilots. Meanwhile, April and May are said to have a fairly even spread of professions, births in the summer months mean a much lower chance of becoming a high-earning football player, doctor or dentist. The study was gained by researchers who analyzed the birth months of people in 19 separate occupations using information from the last census (人口普查), the Daily Mail reported. Although these trends may be difficult to explain, relations between birth months and specific health problems have a scientific basis.

Spring babies are at greater risk of illnesses including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, asthma and autism. They may also be less clever than classmates born in other parts of the year.

25. What does the underlined phrase “embark on” refer to?

A. land on B. keep in touch with C. be engaged in D. break from

26. According to the researchers, a child born in March is likely to become_______.

A. a debt collector B. a pilot C. a dentist D. an artist

27. We can learn from the text that______.

A. the month babies are born could only affect his intelligence and length of life

B. People born in the summer months are more likely to get highly paid

C. Spring babies may have the bigger chance to get ill

D. the choice of profession for April and May is very narrow

28. What can be included from the passage?

A. There exist connections between birth date and occupations

B. The fate has been already decided when people are born

C. People born in Autumn would be more successful than those born in Spring

D. The time of year one is born decides which specific health problems one has

It is part book, part film, part game—and a world away from the best-selling books in any season. But Julian McCrea, developer of the immersive(拟真的) iPad thriller The Craftsman, is convinced his mashup (混搭) of literary gothic and cinematic chiller(恐怖电影或书籍) is the future of fiction.

The app turns the reader into the main character in a tale that draws on influences such as Edgar Allen Poe and Alfred Hitchcock. In future works, McCrea hopes to use the iPad’s built-in camera to read your facial expressions, letting him increase the tension accordingly as the story develops.

With sales of paper books declining, McCrea believes the app represents a new kind of digital storytelling that could open up an Alice in Wonderland rabbit hole of possibilities.

“No two people will get the same experience,” says McCrea, who gave up his previous job three years ago to start Portal Entertainment.

The project has echoes of the “choose your own adventure” paperbacks of the 1980s and 90s, which allowed pre-teen readers to plot their own way through treasure islands and spooky forests. But the creators of the new app wanted to take the idea further.

“You,” as a fully paid-up character in the drama, can sign online petitions (请愿书) on factious(虚构的)websites and receive mysterious message on your mobile phone from other characters, while the events you attend in the story pop up in your real-life calendar, as the app’s creators attempt to “bleed” the story into your everyday life.

With the story unfolding in short episodes over five days McCrea hopes to capture an audience of thirtysomething dads used to whipping out their phone to play Angry Birds when they have a spare five minutes. But also in his sights is the £87 million British market for thrillers and crime novels.

Authors embrace the new form of digital storytelling as a chance to engage in the innovations of the publishing industry. Mike Jones, the novelist who led the writers’ team for The Craftsman, says the appeal of the app project was the chance to bring some of the “age-old traditions of storytelling –genre, character a
