Text 3 W: Would you call a taxi to take me to the hospital? I can’t catch a bus that late. M: Call a taxi? I’ll take you myself. Text 4 W: Why didn’t you come to the party last night? M: Well, I went straight to the library after class. W: Why? Did you have a test today? M: No, I didn’t. I just wanted to find some books. Text 5 W: Guess what? I got an e-mail from Tom. He’s started at a new school. M: Oh, why? What’s he done wrong? W: It’s not that. His father changed jobs and they’ve moved to Milan. Text 6 W: Good evening, sir. Can I help you? M: I have a room reserved in your hotel a week ago. My name is Michael Brown. W: Just a minute, please. Yes, a single room for October 15. M: That’s right. W: Are you paying in cash or by credit card? M: Do you accept traveler’s check? W: Certainly. Here’s your key card, sir. Room No.1505. The bellboy will take your luggage to your room. W: From whom? M: I don’t know. W: Let me see... What’s this language? M: Not English anyway. Just open it. There may be a surprise waiting for you. W: Alright. M: Wow! What’s this? W: Oh, now I remember. This is a package from a Dutch friend of mine I met on the Internet. It’s chocolate! M: Oh, I’ve got the picture here. So this is basically Dutch chocolate? What’s so special? W: It’s actually more special than you think. M: Really? W: Yeah. Go and get two glasses of milk. M: Alright, here you are. W: We can put the chocolate in the milk and stir with a spoon. And the milk now becomes chocolate milk. M: Impressive. Text 9 M: Now, where am I staying in Barcelona? W: I’ve booked you out in the Sky Palace, just at the airport terminal. M: Sky Palace? Wasn’t it possible to get me into Barcelona Hotel as usual? W: Well, Barcelona Hotel would have involved much more traveling for you. The company you’re visiting is located near the airport. M: Oh, I see. Yes, fine. Have you got the hotel phone number? W: Yes, I’ve got it for you from the travel agency. And at the next stop, you’ve been booked into the Larval Hotel in Brussels. M: The Larval Hotel? I’ve already stayed there twice and found it rather depressing. Is it possible to change the hotel? W: Of course, I will do my best. Oh, the last stop, London. M: Ok. When everything is settled, I will ask my wife to meet me at the Heathrow Airport. Is there anything else? W: If possible, I will ask them to send the tickets up before we close today. That’s all in order now. Text 10 When young people get their first real jobs, they may face a lot of new, confusing situations. They may find that everything is different from the way things were at school. It is also possible that they will feel uncomfortable in both professional and social situations. Eventually, they realize that university classes can’t be the only preparation for all of the different situations that arise in the working world. Perhaps the best way to learn how to behave in the working world is to identify a worker you admire and observe his behavior. In doing so, you will be able to see what it is that you admire in this person. For example, you will observe how he acts in a crisis. Perhaps even more importantly, you will be able to see what his approach to everyday situations is. While you are observing your colleague, you should be asking yourself whether his behavior is like yours and how you can learn from his responses to a variety of situations. By watching and learning from a model, you will probably begin to identify and adopt good working habits. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
