第二部分 阅读理解 (共两节,满分40分)

(共 15小题:每小题 2 分,满分30分)

A

Last year, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington D. C. I saw many of our unfortunate and homeless fellow citizens on the street.

Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended. Immediately, I pulled out all of my loose change and placed it on her hand without even looking at her. I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar.

But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money. I just need help finding the post office.”

In an instant, I realized what I had done. I acted with prejudice (偏见) — I judged another person simply for what I assumed she had to be.

I hated what I saw in myself. This incident re-awakened my belief in humility (谦卑) I’d lost for a moment.

The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived in US at 15. I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother and sister, and a strong, no-nonsense mother. Through the years, I have been a doorkeeper, roofer, cashier, mechanic and pizza delivery driver among many other humble (卑微的) jobs, and eventually I became a network engineer.

In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice. I remember a time, at age 17 — I was a busboy, and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. So I know what it’s like, and I should have known better.

But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am, where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the streets cured me of my self-induced (自我引发的) blindness. She reminded me of my belief in humility and to always keep my eyes and heart open.

36. How did the writer give the blind woman money?

A. In a respectful way. B. In a polite way.

C. In an impatient way. D. In a painful way.

37. How many jobs are clearly mentioned in the passage?

A. 4. B. 5. C. 6. D. 7.

38. At the end of the story, the writer might ________.

A. help the lady to the post office

B. say sorry to the woman and gave her more money

C. ignore the woman

D. send the woman home

services are not just being pushed on them for your own benefit. This means listening carefully to what they want, and what their concerns are. If you do this genuinely and sincerely, you will earn trust of your prospective customers.

Persuading your customers to buy something from you is a part of communication that is obviously a little difficult. When you are trying to persuade someone, you should be clear about human emotions and know what drivers people to buy. Find out what emotions you can tap, and then discuss the incentives and rewards for joining you. You can also talk about the facts, statistics or explain who else has jumped in. use positive words, positive actions and have a sense of humor.

If you practice these things, you will become an effective and confident communicator in no time and will start to see the business rolling in!

39 .According to the author, communication skills __________.

A. are familiar to everybody B. need to be practiced

C. mean listening and chatting D. can be gained from books

40 .The underlined words “prospective customers” probably refer to ________.

A. possible customers B. people who need help

C. the products to be sold D. people talking to you

41. We may learn from the text that an effective way to persuade your customers is to _________.

A. give them a discount B. try to consider their feelings

C. show them you are a good speaker D. beg them to help you

42. The passage mainly tells us _______

A. how to sell something to people B. how to help people in need

C. how to communicate with others D. how to make new people trust you

Read a whole book in English?Me?

Yes,you. Believe it or not, that may be easier than you think. Not all classics are too difficult or complicated. So you’re not limited to the simplified versions. And the easier books are not all for children.

Books in their original versions may send you to the dictionary. And you might not understand everything you read. But reading one from cover to cover will give you a real sense of accomplishment.

The key is to find the right books.Let’s take a look at these.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe(C.S.Lewis)

Stepping into an old wardrobe, four English schoolchildren find themselves in the magical world of Narnia. On this delightful land, they find friends among the many talking creatures.

The children soon discover, however, that Narnia is ruled by the White Witch.Edmund, one of the children, falls under her power.Who can free Narnia?Only Asian, the great and noble lion.He alone knows the Deeper Magic. But the children themselves must help fight the battle against the White Witch and those who serve her.

The Old Man and the Sea?(Ernest Hemingway)

Santiago,an old Cuban fisherman, hasn’t caught any fish in more than 80 days.Sailing far out from land, the old man hooks an enormous fish. That begins an agonizing three-day battle.First he struggles against the great fish. Then he must fight off the sharks that circle the little boat and threaten to eat his fish. Exhausted and bleeding, the old man
