When Frida Kahlo’s paintings were on show in London, a poet described her paintings as “a ribbon(丝带) around a bomb”. Such comments seem to suggest Kahlo had a big influence on the art world of her time. Sadly, she is actually a much bigger name today than she was during her time.

Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City, Kahlo suffered from polio(小儿麻痹症) at the age of seven. Her spine(脊柱) became bent as she grew older. Then, in 1925, her back was broken in several places in a school-bus accident. Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but noting was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering, Kahlo taught herself to paint.

In 1929, she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist. Rivera’s strong influence on Kahlo’s style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s, known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.

Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and 1940s, even in her home country. Her first one-woman show in Mexico was not held until 1953. For more than a decade after her death in 1954, Kahlo’s works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.

Sixteen traffic accidents in seven days have killed 21 people and injured 29, according to a report yesterday in Beijing Daily.

The accidents came after speed limits on some train routes were raised on October 1. As a result of the accidents, 5 cars or farm vehicles(车辆) were also destroyed.

The newspaper reported that automobile drivers often cross road junctions(交叉口) in a rush, but did not get out of the way of passing trains in time.

At 7:16 a.m. on October 7, a train heading from Baotou to Xi’an was passing the section linking Anyi and Banpo. At a road junction 744 kilometers from Anyi, a mini-bus crossed into its path. The collision(碰撞) killed 8 passengers in the mini-bus and injured 20, 14 of them seriously. The train stopped there for 20 minutes. The mini-bus was destroyed.

In addition, some careless pedestrians(行人) were also blamed for the accidents. Pedestrians often broke traffic rules by crossing railroad junctions while paying no attention to traffic signals. Some people got struck while walking along the railway track or crossing it.

New railway rules have raised the speed of trains on 3 railway arteries(干线), Beijing-Guangzhou, Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Harbin, to as much as 150 kilometres per hour. The higher speeds have cut the time from Beijing to Guangzhou by 5 hours. The time from Beijing to Shanghai and Beijing to Harbin has been reduced by more than an hour.

As for visiting Walt Disney World, people usually have trouble in arranging. The following will give you some practical suggestions on paying a valuable visit to the famous park.

When to go?

While it’s always busy, Disney World is slightly slower between mid-January and March. It’s summer when the visitors, combined with the heat and humidity(潮湿), are crowded. Your best choice is either early in the morning or late in the day—often you can enjoy more rides in the first or last two hours of the day than the entire rest of the day combined.

Where to stay?

The question: to stay in Disney World Resort property or not. Disney World offers three resort pricing: Deluxe(豪华的), Moderate, and Value, with good facilities and in-hotel attractions. That said, they all offer “Extra Magic Hours” (early access to the theme parks), guaranteed entry when the parks are over-crowded, and frequent shuttle service to the many attractions. What to stay?

Make use of the “Fast Pass” which, for no extra cost, allows you to insert your park entrance ticket into a particular machine at the attraction and receive a scheduled ride time a little later on. For example, use your Fast Pass ticket at a ride just before getting lunch. Once you’re done with eating, you can return to the ride and jump right on during the busiest time of day. At the Animal Kingdom, the animals are most active either early or late in the day, so plan accordingly. Thankfully this is fit for the least busy time of day in the park. Study the map of the park the night before to plan your visit. You’ll save time by knowing where things are and where you’re headed.
