An 11-year-old Mexican boy who had been suffering from a huge tumor(肿瘤) drew international attention after U.S. officials helped him get treatment in New Mexico. He has had the tumor removed after a long surgery.

Jose Antonio underwent(接受) surgery at the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital to remove the tumor from his neck, shoulder and body area. The surgery lasted more than 12 hours and involved 25 medical professionals. “The road to recovery will be long, and many challenges still lie ahead for this young boy,” said a doctor.

In July 2012, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations helped pick up Jose and his parents from a neighborhood in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Federal agents (联邦探员) helped the family seek care for Jose. After the boy’s story went public, there was an increase in donations to help him raise money for the surgeries.

Jose was told by doctors at the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital that he had to undergo a series of surgeries and treatments to remove the huge fluid build-up. Jose’s parents have said the tumor on his shoulder and neck grew so large that it affected his eyesight. They said they were afraid it might move into his heart. With no money for medical care, the family sought treatment in El Paso, but they did not receive any help. Now in the U,S,, the huge tumor has finally been removed.

The difficult situation of Jose drew support from New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, who asked federal officials to make his stay in the U.S. longer so he could continue treatment. But that’s not the end of the story. Jose still needs surgeries to reconstruct his shoulder bone and to remove extra skin. If you are as kind-hearted as the others who have donated money to help the boy, donate some money for the boy, too. Every amount counts.

Parents struggling to combine paid work with bringing up their children now have some positive news thanks to a new study by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) on mother’s employment and child’s socio-emotional behavior in the UK. The research shows that there are no significant side effects on a child’s social or emotional development if their mothers work during their early years.

The ideal atmosphere for children, both boys and girls, was shown to be where both parents lived in the home and both were in paid employment. For children living with two parents, the impact of the working life of the mother may partly depend on the father’s own working arrangements. The researchers discovered that the relationship between behavioral difficulties and employment of the mother was stronger for girls than for boys and that could not be explained by household income, level of mother’s education or depression in the mother.

The leading researcher in this study, Dr Anne McMunn, has said: "Mothers who work are more likely to have higher educational qualifications, live in a higher income household, and have a lower possibility of being depressed than mothers who are not in paid work. These factors explained the higher levels of behavioral difficulties for boys of non-working mothers, but the same was not true for girls"
