She would tell me not to be a follower and not to set 12 on what I could achieve. She 13 believed that you could achieve 14 you want if you work hard. I would never forget the story that she once told me: A farmer won the first 15 at the country fair(交易会) for his radish (小萝卜) that was the exact shape and 16 of a milk bottle. Many were 17 about how the farmer was able to grow this radish that was the exact shape of a milk bottle. 18 one gentleman went up to the farmer and asked the question. The farmer replied,“It was 19 . I got the seed growing and then I put it into the milk bottle. It had 20 else to go.” You can use this story as an analogy (比喻) to life - our lives are 21 by the kind of surroundings we place ourselves in, the people who we allow to influence us, and the goals we give ourselves. If we only 22 and take no action, then we get no further. But if we 23 carefully, set a goal and take action, then our life takes on a 24 shape. Goals and actions can help us accomplish more in a year than what some people will accomplish in a lifetime. To prove this 25 ,read the biographies of 26 people and you will see that goals and actions 27 played a big role in their success. Remember the wisdom of Mary Kay Ash, who said,“Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go 28 your mind lets you. Whatever you believe, remember, you can achieve.” 29 , don't put yourself in a bottle; in other words, move out of what is 30 and safe if you want to move forward. 11. Controlled 22.A. doubt B. refuse C. dream D. change 23.A. struggle B. plan C. continue D. insist 24.A. beautiful B. solid C. different D. clear 25.A. proverb B. lesson C. evidence D. point 26.A. successful B. brave C. friendly D. careful 27.A. in fact B. partly C. not at all D. as usual 28.A. as if B. in case C. as long as D. as far as 29.A. But researchers say bedtime rules may improve a child’s development. A new study found better results in four-year-olds who go to bed around the same time every night and sleep at least eleven hours. Getting less than that was linked to lower abilities in language, reading and early math skills. Researchers at SRI International in California did the study. It involved about eight thousand preschool children whose parents took part in government research on early childhood. The parents answered questions by telephone at nine months and again at four years. The amount of sleep was based on their reporting of a child’s usual bedtime and wake time. These were not independently confirmed. SRI policy researcher Erika Gaylor says doctors can easily try to get parents to set regular bedtimes. And at bedtime she urges(力劝)parents to follow routines(惯例) like reading books or telling stories to their children. For most measures of development, the study found that an earlier bedtime was also a predictor of higher scores. Last August, a study in the journal Sleep Medicine said children who go to bed after nine o’clock took longer to fall asleep and slept less. The study found that children also got less sleep if they did not have bedtime routines. The new findings were presented this week in San Antonio, Texas, at a meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies. 31.According to the text, all the following can improve a child’s development EXCEPT ______ A. going to bed about the same time every evening. Children with regular bedtime can develop better in their primary study. B. Children going to bed after nine o’clock can fall asleep more easily. C. A child who goes to bed earlier can study better. D. The children in this research go to bed according to the researcher’s advice. 33. What’s the main idea of the text? A. Eight thousand children took part in a government research. B. When a child should go to bed and wake up. C. How to make a child sleep better. D. Bedtime rules can help a child develop better.Growing up on a tobacco farm, Emma B Avery was used to hard times. When she was seven, her family’s farmhouse burned to the ground. Her father made a temporary shelter, where eight people had to sleep in two beds. As soon as Emma and her four brothers and two sisters were big enough, they were out in the fields. Emma would find her comfort in school, even as a C student, thanks to one teacher. When she moved on to middle school, Emma was far behind her classmates. She kept her head down, trying not to be noticed, struggling to catch up, and feeling like an outsider. Then one day, when Emma was 16, a teacher named Mr. Potts changed everything. Looking his students in the eye, Mr. Potts said, “Being a C student does not mean you do not have a valuable contribution to make. Some of you have to work in the fields in the evening and do not have time to study. But if you do your best, you have a gift to give.” The teacher’s words made Emma believe she could do well, and she worked harder. In the end she won a scholarship to St. Paul’s College, graduated with a degree in elementary education in 1967, and got a job in the public-school system. Then, at George Washington University, she received a master’s in education in 1970, and afterwards in the same year she married Ron Smothers. Over the next six years, Emma taught in public schools in Miami. In 1976, after saving $10,000, she opened her first restaurant in Los Angeles. Eventually Emma stopped teaching, and her business expanded to six restaurants. In gratitude (感激) for what she has been able to achieve, Emma donates a lot. She has no idea how much money she’s given away. She says, “Those I want to help are the C students who just need help, direction and confidence.” 34. From the text we learn that Emma ______.
