第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

The subway train sways back and forth (前后摇摆), its wheels screaming more loudly than ever against the tracks (车轨). Outside the window the freezing cold of winter rules and the bay (海湾) looks like a giant, bottomless pit (深坑) as the train crosses over it. The carriage is filled with frozen, self-centered, bored passengers. Good morning! Suddenly, a little boy pushes his way in between rude grown-up legs – the kind that don’t want to make room for you. While his father stays by the door, the boy sits next to the window, surrounded by unfriendly, tired adults. What a brave child, I think to myself. As the train enters a tunnel (隧道), something totally unexpected and weird happens. The little boy slides down from his seat and puts his hand on my knee. For a moment, I think that he wants to go past me and return to his father, so I shift (移动) a bit. But instead of moving on, the boy leans forward and stretches his head up towards me. He wants to tell me something, I think, so I bend down to listen to what he has to say. Wrong again! He kisses me softly on the cheek. “He’s so happy to be alive,” the father says. “He’s been very sick.” Then he returns to his seat, leans back and cheerfully starts looking out of the window. But I’m shocked. What was that about? A kid kissing an unknown grown-up on the train? Nervous and bewildered (困惑的), I look questioningly at his father. The train stops and the father and son get down and disappear into the crowd. The doors close. On my cheek I can still feel the child’s kiss – a kiss that has caused me to do some soul-searching. How many grown-ups go around kissing each other from the simple joy of being alive? How many even give much thought to the privilege (特权) of living? What would happen if we all just started being ourselves?

51. We can conclude from the first paragraph that the author felt ______ on the train.

A. excited

B. worried

C. confused

D. displeased

52. The underlined word “weird” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ______.

A. strange

B. terrible

C. comforting

D. annoying (恼人的)

53. Why did the boy kiss the author? A. To share his happiness. B. To make fun of him or her. C. To make friends with him or her. D. To celebrate his father’s recovery (康复). 54. Which of the following would the author probably agree with? A. We should be friendly to others. B. We should put ourselves in others’ shoes. C. There should be no privilege in our lives. D. We should value the simple fact that we are alive.

B

What makes you laugh? A person from the US might answer that question a bit differently than someone from the UK – at least, that’s what people tend to believe. According to popular belief, Brits laugh at mean jokes, especially ones that insult (侮辱) the person telling the joke. For example, a comedian friend of mine tells the following joke: “My name is Paul Creasy and I’m very sorry about that.” He’s putting himself down by apologizing for his own name. This is a very British sort of joke. On the other hand, Americans are believed to dislike cruel jokes. They’re also believed to dislike irony (讽刺) – when joke-tellers say one thing but mean something else. For example, if it were raining outside, it would be ironic to say: “This weather is beautiful! Let’s have a picnic!” People tend to (倾向于) believe that Americans don’t understand irony and struggle to joke around with British people. In my experience, however, these stereotypes (成见) are not actually true. Plenty of US comedy is mean (刻薄的) and ironic. For example, one popular US comedy event is the Comedy Central Roast, a TV show dedicated (专注于) to one famous actor or performer, in which that person’s friends take turns making fun of him
