Three workers and three scientists are traveling by train to a big city. At the station，the three scientists each buy tickets and watch as the three workers buy only a single ticket.

“How are three people going to travel on only one ticket？” asks a scientist.“Watch and you’ll see，” answers a worker. They all board the train. The scientists take their respective seats but all three workers cram into a restroom and close the door behind them.

Shortly after the train has departed，the conductor(售票员) comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says，“Ticket，please.” The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.

To their astonishment，the workers don’t buy a ticket at all.“How are you going to travel without a ticket？”asks one puzzled scientist.“Watch and you’ll see，” answers a worker. When they board the train, the three scientists cram into a restroom and the three workers cram into another one nearby. The train departs.

Shortly afterward，one of the workers leaves his restroom and walks over to the restroom where the scientists are hiding. He knocks on the door and says，“Ticket，please.”

As we all know, French novelist Jules Verne (1828～1905) is often called the father of science fictions. Although he was not a great traveller himself，his characters journeyed to the moon (in From Earth to Moon)，Under the sea (in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea)，into a volcano (in A Journey to the Centre of the Earth)，around the world (in Around the World in Eighty Days) and to many other places.

Jules Verne was born in the French city of Nantes in 1828.When he was a boy he ran away from home to work on a ship. However，his father soon found him and brought him home. After that he decided that any future travel he did would be in books. In 1847，his father sent Jules to Paris to study to be a lawyer. Even though he was busy writing，Verne passed his exams in 1849 with high marks.

When Jules told his father he did not want to be a lawyer，his father was very angry. He stopped sending his son any money，so Jules had to earn a living by his writing. Over the next few years he wrote many stories and plays which brought him only a little money. Then，in 1856，he met Honorine de Viane，a rich，young widow(寡妇)with two children. The couple married the next year and their only child Michel was born in 1862.

After his marriage，Verne worked as a businessman in Paris. However，he was not very successful at his job and spent most of his time writing books and doing research for the next one. In 1863，he published his novel Five Weeks in a Balloon and in the following year he published A Journey to the Centre of the Earth which brought him fame. His books became so popular and earned him so much money that he was able to leave his job and work full time on his writing.

In his lifetime，Jules Verne wrote more than 50 books and he became a rich man. Many of these imaginative novels have been turned into films.

There are lots of natural disasters in the world. Earthquakes hit without warning, anytime day or night. An earthquake can cause serious damage and death. It is important to know how to prepare something before an earthquake and what to do during and after an earthquake.

Preparation

Move heavy pictures and mirrors away from places where people sleep or sit. Find safe places to stay and keep away from windows, mirrors or where heavy furniture could fall. Prepare things like flashlight, radios, batteries and bottled water on hand, as during a quake, it is likely that electricity and water will be cut off .

During an earthquake: Indoors

If you are indoors when an earthquake strikes, drop to the ground, get under a heavy piece of furniture and hold on or stay in a corner. Don’t try to leave the building, because most injuries occur when people move everywhere during an earthquake. Stay in your seat if you are in a stadium or a theater. Get below the level of the back of the seat and cover your head and neck with your arms. If you are in a crowded store or public area, remember to get away from shelves or other areas where objects may fall. Do not run for the door.

During an earthquake: Outdoors

If you are outdoors during an earthquake, move away from buildings, glass windows and doors. There is danger from falling things, electrical wires and glass. The best place to be is an open space. If you are in a car during an earthquake, stay in your car. Drive to an open space. Do not stop under freeways or on bridges because they are dangerous during a quake.

After an earthquake

Expect aftershocks. Electricity and water supplies may be cut off, so save your water supplies. It is the most important thing after an earthquake.
