Aliyu took up her work two years ago, hoping to use the 7,000 naira(£28) she earned every month to put her younger sisters and brothers through school following the death of their mother , the only one who made money to support the family. But her family begged her to stop doing this job, and she has received “judgment and warnings” from strangers too. “My grandmother cried for many days. Some people thought it was a joke to bring more customers. Others said if she is doing it for money, let’s just give her money to stop bringing us shame,” she said as she got water from a well by the roadside. “But I hate laziness or depending on somebody else.” However, Aliyu has admirers. “Some customers only allow her to wash their cars,” said her colleague Shamsudeen Mohammed. “I was trained to wash cars by men, and I can honestly tell you women are better to work under,” he added. Recently another woman came to Aliyu to ask for advice on starting her own car wash. “Unfortunately her family discouraged her. I told her, if you listen to them, you will find yourself begging or marrying a man who is older than your grandfather,” she said. Though she is considered a pariah by many, Aliyu has no plans to stop her work. “I see men doing something and I think I can do it too.” 21. Madinat Aliyu washes cars mainly to . Shy but smart. B. Independent and confident. C. Honest but lazy. D. Humorous and imaginative. B If you’re like most busy people, finding time to exercise and stay in phone contact with friends and family can be as difficult as finding a parking place at the mall. With so many items on your to-do list, exercise and telephone time often drop to the bottom of the list. Sure you can chat with people on your cellphone while shopping or driving your car, but the former makes you a public nuisance and the latter makes you a possible highway danger. A better solution to the “too busy to exercise and talk on the phone problem” is to combine the two activities into a mood boosting exercise routine that I call the Walk and Talk. The Walk and Talk exercise routine can be put into even the busiest days or expanded on days when an unexpected hole appears in your schedule. Instead of sitting on your couch without moving, make it a rule that you’re always in motion with your phone in hand. If the weather is bad, you can walk or do simple dance moves. Be sure to expand your stomach and muscles while you’re talking to receive the largest muscle benefits. If it is not raining or windy enough to tip you over, an outdoor Walk and Talk is best since you will benefit from fresh air and sunshine. Use ear buds if you have them so you can swing your arms while walking. Once your phone is set up to your liking, start calling all the friends and relatives to whom you owe phone calls or people with whom you want to keep or renew contact. While you’re talking, be sure to walk fast enough to burn calories. 25. Walk and Talk refers to . A. having a walk with the family while talking with them B. doing exercise while you’re making a phone call C. talking on the phone while you are shopping D. walking and talking any time 26. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about? A. How to do Walk and Talk. B. The time to do Walk and Talk. C. When to talk to your friends. D. The benefits of Walk and Talk. 27. The underlined part “in motion” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “ ”. A. moving B. standing C. running D. talking 28. What can we learn from the passage? A. Walk and Talk is only suitable for the young. B. The sitting room is not a good place for Walk and Talk. C. When it’s windy, we shouldn’t do an outdoor Walk and Talk. D. Walk and Talk can help us stay in touch with friends and exercise. C Making a decision is quick. It happens in a moment. But getting ready to make a decision can take a long time. Understanding how people make decisions can help in communicating with them more effectively and help them arrive at a decision faster. People make decisions because it either looks right, feels right, sounds right or makes sense to them. We often tell ourselves we make decisions according to logic and reason, but often a decision is an emotional one that we justify with logic. Looks Right Some people make decisions according to a picture in their minds of how it literally looks right. They like examples or graphs. Show them pictures, paint them a mental picture with words. They trust what they can see. Sounds Right Some people do things because they hear a series of words which sound right to them. They like to hear about things. Tell them about your product, pay attention to your voice intonation to ensure it shows confidence. Feels Right Some people make decisions by trying the product out so they can get a good feeling about it. They literally feel a sensation in their body that feels right. Makes Sense Some people need reasons for what you want them to do. Give them facts, data and reasons. Answer the “why” for them. They use information in a way that produces a feeling that “makes sense” to them. Communication Tips Listen for obvious conversational clues. Listen for key phrases in your conversation such as “Well, that makes sense to me!” or “Looks OK to me.” Another is “Oh, that feels good!” By listening to what people say, asking questions and observing their behavior, they will literally tell you how they go about making a decision. 29. In the writer’s opinion, . A. it often takes a long time to make a decision B. our decisions are often based on logic and reason C. it’s hard to understand how people make decisions D. knowing how people make decisions can improve communication 30. For the “Looks Right” people, what should we do to help them make a decision? A. Help them form pictures in their minds. B. Paint them a picture at any time. C. Make them try the product out. D. Talk with them about logic. 31. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To tell us how to observe people. B. To tell us how to make decisions wisely. C. To tell us how to communicate with friends. D. To tell us something about how people make decis | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
