It is a little smaller than China. It is in the south of the earth. Australia is big, but its population is not large. The population of Australia is nearly as large as that of Shanghai. The government has made enough laws to fight pollution. The cities in Australia have got little air or water pollution. The sky is blue and the water is clean. You can clearly see fish swimming in the rivers. Plants grow very well. Last month we visited Perth, the biggest city in Western Australia, and went to a wild flowers’ exhibition. There we saw a large number of wild flowers we had never seen before. We had a wonderful time. Perth is famous for its beautiful wild flowers. And in spring every year Perth has the wild flowers’ exhibition. After visiting Perth, we spent the day in the countryside. We sat down and had a rest near a path at the foot of a hill. It was quiet and we enjoyed ourselves. Suddenly we heard bells ringing at the top of the hill. What we saw made us pick up all our things and run back to the car as quickly as we could. There were about three hundred sheep coming towards us down the path. Australia is famous for its sheep and kangaroos. After a short drive from any town, you will find yourself in the middle of white sheep. Sheep, sheep, everywhere are sheep. 21.Australia is _______. A.the largest country in the world B.as large as Shanghai C.not as large as China D.the largest island in the north of the earth 22.The government had made _______. A.few laws to fight pollution B.so many laws to fight pollution C.enough laws that it can hardly fight pollution D.enough laws because the pollution is very serious 23.Which of the following is NOT true? A.Perth is famous for its beautiful wild flowers. B.Perth is bigger than any other city in Western Australia. C.Perth lies in the west of Australia. D.No other city is larger than Perth in Australia. 24. Perth holds a wild flowers’ show every year mainly because _______. A.many farmers grow flowers in Perth B.people in Perth like flowers C.beautiful wild flowers are well-known in Perth D.people seldom see wild flowers in Perth B Do you know that people without friends are more likely to die an early death? It’s true. However, not all the friends are helpful to up your chances of living a long, happy life. The following types of friends are just what you need to keep the doctor away. A Loyal Best Friend Sometimes a loyal best friend is the only thing you need to stay calm. Everyone needs a non-judgmental friend who will support them no matter what. This is the kind of friend who knows all of your deepest and darkest secrets, but still loves you all the same. An Honest Confidant There are certain situations in life where we need to hear the harsh truth. It is really hard for you to face it, but that’s what the honest confidant is for. Friends are supposed to be honest with each other. If you find someone who is bravely honest with you (in a constructive way), then hold on to this person! People like that are hard to come by these days. A Polar Opposite If you only develop friendships with others who follow the same beliefs, customs, and values as you do, chances are you’re kept away from the rest of the world. Try to break out of your comfortable zone and befriend people who hold opposing views. You’ll learn to accept people who don’t see the world exactly the way you see it. A Work Pal Do you know that with a full—time job, you spend at least 50%of your waking hours at work? Depressing, isn’t it? The more isolated you are at work, the more depressed you get. That’s why it makes sense to get a work pal to chat with to help you get through the week. You spend 50%of your waking hours at work, and so does your work pal. You’ll find it much easier to complain about work with someone than to eat lunch alone every day. With them in your life, you’re bound to live a long and happy life! 25. A loyal best friend must _______ according to the passage. A.be one of family members B.love you whoever you are C.stay with you most of the time D.be good at keeping you quiet 26. You need a Polar Opposite as a friend because he will _______. A.help open your eyes to a different world B.teach us to build a comfortable zone C.support you no matter what you do D.change you into an entirely different person 27. We can infer that a work pal _______. A.never complains about your work B.makes you feel isolated at work C.works with you most of time D.often prepares meals for you 28.The author wrote the passage in order to _______. A.show it is harder to make friends now B.explain why people need true friendship C.teach how to become a good friend D.tell us what kind of friends are beneficial C Everyone knows there are many English expressions about clothes. There is no need to keep it a secret, or to keep it under your hat. In fact, if I keep talking, soon enough you will start to think I am an old hat about this — a real expert. Do not be fooled, though. My friends sometimes call me a wolf in sheep’s clothing. This is someone who acts like a good person, but is really a bad person. I’m not really a bad person. But I do love clothes. It is always fun to get dressed up. I look great in my best clothes. When I put them on, I feel decked out. You might say when I wear my best clothes, I am dressed to the nines or dressed to the teeth. In fact, my husband says I look dressed to kill. Of course, I would never kill anyone. But, there is something special about putting on clothes that are pleasing to the eye. My best clothes are not modern or fashionable. Maybe someday they will come into fashion. But I really do not care. They certainly look better on me than my birthday suit. Did you know that everyone has a birthday suit? You wear it when you are wearing no clothes at all. Babies are born wearing their birthday suits. I am very careful with my clothes. I handle them with kid gloves. I try not to get them dirty or torn. Most of my clothes fit like a glove. They fit perfectly. But when I eat too much, I feel like my clothes might burst at the seams. My clothes feel too restrictive and tight. Some of the clothes I like best are hand-me-downs. My older sister gave them to me when she no longer wanted them. Hand-me-downs are great because clothes often cost too much money. I live on a shoestring. I have a very small budget and little money to spend on clothes. However, my sister has a lot of money to spend on clothes. Maybe someday the shoe will be on the other foot. The opposite will be true. I will have a lot of money to buy clothes and my sister will get hand-me-downs from me. I admit I dream of being rich. I dream that someday I will be able to live like a rich person. I will know what it is like to walk in another person’s shoes. Some of my friends got rich by riding someone else’s coat tails. They are successful today as a result of someone else being successful. But, I believe you should never criticize others for something you would do yourself.
