A superstar is someone who is usually famous in sports, or films, or popular music, someone like the singer Michael Jackson. It is obvious that television brings us not only advantages but also disadvantages .

At first, television is both a convenient channel of amusement, and a relatively cheap one. If we have a TV set in the family, we are not necessary to go to the cinema or theatre to enjoy programme with expensive tickets. All that they have to do is press a button with a finger, and they can watch all the programmes they like, such as TV talk shows , movies, opera and so on. But some people think of it as a danger. When we watch TV, we don’t need to do anything . We do not even have to leave our sofa because we have a remote control in our hand. We don’t need to make any judgment or statement about it. We are totally passive and don’t use our head to think hard about some matters.

As we all know, television keeps us informed about world events—including all the events in society, science and politics .We can get a good idea of the most remote countries and the strangest customs in their country. Of course the radio performs this service too, but the effect of the programme is not better than on the television. Everything we enjoy on the television is much more vivid and realistic. However, in turn there is a great danger. Usually we cannot resist the television screen, because it has a great harm for us. We have been so accustomed to enjoying the screen, so dependent on its pictures. But when our TV sets are out of order, we are surprised to find that we have much more time to do things. And at this time we actually begin to have a talk to each other again. It is really worth thinking.

Of course the arguments about the advantages and disadvantages of television are on the go.We can not simply say television itself is good or bad. The truth is that how we use it determines its true value to our society.

A new report says more and more international students are attending colleges and universities in the United States. It also notes a large increase in the number of international students form China. These findings are from the latest edition(版) of the Open Doors Report.

The report tells the record number of international students in the United States during the 2011-2012 school year. It says more than 764,400 such students were attending American colleges and universities during that period. That means an increase of almost 6% compared to one year earlier. By comparison (比较)，the number of Americans who are studying overseas increased by 1%.

The report says 194,000 students at American colleges and universities are from China. That is an increase of more than 23% over the year before. Peggy Blumenthal is an assistant to the president of the Institute of International Education. She says many Chinese families are able to pay for the highest-quality education for their children. The children mainly choose to study in America.“ We know many of them have enough income to be able to afford to send them anywhere in the world that they want to go. And for the most part, looking around the world, Chinese students still prefer to come to the United States as their destination of choice.” She says.

Chinese students are not the only ones who want to attend American colleges and universities . After China, India sends the second largest number of students to the United States for higher education. India has about 100,000 students in American schools. South Korea is third with about 70,000 students.

Why do so many foreign students study in the United States ? Peggy Blumenthal provides one reason. “ The advantage America has is that we have a huge system and a very diverse (多样的) system. So there are over four thousand universities and colleges in the United States, and what it tells us is that there is still a lot of room to contain international students.”
