We immediately rushed out to a store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a month to go before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds. June 29 came and, of course, I hadn't lost a single pound; in fact I had gained two. But I figured a nice new girdle (紧身内衣) would cure everything. So on our way out of the city we stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I needed a large-size girdle. The shop assistant found the box with the described girdle marked "LG", and asked if I would like to try it on. “Oh, no, a large will fit just right. I needn't try it on.” The next morning was rather hot, so I waited to get dressed until about 45 minutes before time to go. I opened the box only to find a new girdle in a small size. Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn't fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out in the hotel room between me and the girdle. Have you ever tried to shake 20 pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag? That's it. Finally my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it. At once I put on the pink dress, which didn't match my red face well, and was ready to go. Finally we got to the church. I heard one of the people say that they were having a High Mass. I turned to my husband and asked, "What is a High Mass?" He shrugged his shoulders. Unfortunately, I learned that this particular mass would last one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight and one half seconds—the priest (神父) was going to bless everything except my girdle. 41. The author most probably bought a nice pink dress with a jacket ______. A. 4 weeks later B. 4 weeks ago C. a fortnight ago D. a fortnight later 42. What had the author wanted to do with the tight dress? A. To make herself thinner. B. To buy a large-size girdle. C. To put on some weight. D. To shake herself into it. B A global survey has found that most people can’t live without their mobiles, never leave home without them and, if given a choice, would rather lose their wallet. Calling mobile phones the “remote control” for life, market research firm Synovate says cell phones are so common that more people own more than one phone. Among over 8000 answers polled(民意调查)online in 11 countries, three-quarters says they take their phone with them everywhere, with Russians and Singaporeans the most attached. More than a third also said they can’t live without their phones, topped by Taiwanese and again Singaporeans, while one in four would find it harder to replace the mobile than their purses. Some two thirds answer that they go to bed with their phones nearby and can’t switch them off, even though they want to. They’re afraid they’ll miss something. “Mobiles give us safety and instant access to information. For some young people, they are the number one tool of communication for us, sometimes even more than face-to-face communication. They are our connections to our lives,” Synovate's director in Taiwan said. Mobiles have also changed the nature of relationships. At present, nearly half of all people use text messages to chat; a fifth begin first-dates by text messages and almost the same number end a love affair. Apart from the obvious calling and texting, the top three features people use regularly on their mobile phones are the alarm clock, the camera and the games. It may also let you surf the Internet, listen to music to music wherever you are. Yet, owning a smart phone may not be as smart as you think. The all- singing, all-dancing mobile phones may make addicted, especially the young. So scientists warn that people should be aware of the advantages they bring us. 46. People love cell phones so much that__________. A. they would lose their wallets B. they would control their lives C. they would buy two cell phones D. they would take them everywhere 47. Among the surveyed, about how many people think mobiles are less important than money? A. 2600. B. 5300. C. 800. D. 2000 48. Most people keep their phones on while sleeping so as to _________. A. live with them B. keep safe by phones C. avoid missing messages or phones calls D. use the alarm clock to wake them up 49. Which of the following statem | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
