Our neighbour's son was getting married at an out-of-town church, and my husband and I were invited. We immediately rushed out to a store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a month to go before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds.

A global survey has found that most people can’t live without their mobiles, never leave home without them and, if given a choice, would rather lose their wallet.

Calling mobile phones the “remote control” for life, market research firm Synovate says cell phones are so common that more people own more than one phone. Among over 8000 answers polled(民意调查)online in 11 countries, three-quarters says they take their phone with them everywhere, with Russians and Singaporeans the most attached. More than a third also said they can’t live without their phones, topped by Taiwanese and again Singaporeans, while one in four would find it harder to replace the mobile than their purses. Some two thirds answer that they go to bed with their phones nearby and can’t switch them off, even though they want to. They’re afraid they’ll miss something.

“Mobiles give us safety and instant access to information. For some young people, they are the number one tool of communication for us, sometimes even more than face-to-face communication. They are our connections to our lives,” Synovate's director in Taiwan said.

Mobiles have also changed the nature of relationships. At present, nearly half of all people use text messages to chat; a fifth begin first-dates by text messages and almost the same number end a love affair.

Apart from the obvious calling and texting, the top three features people
use regularly on their mobile phones are the alarm clock, the camera and the games. It may also let you surf the Internet, listen to music to music wherever you are. Yet, owning a smart phone may not be as smart as you think. The all- singing, all-dancing mobile phones may make addicted, especially the young. So scientists warn that people should be aware of the advantages they bring us.
