They have lots of pocket money to spend. And they spend a higher proportion of it online than the rest of us. Teenagers are just the sort of people an online seller is interested in, and the things they want to buy-games, CDs and clothing-are easily sold on the Web. But paying online is a tricky business for consumers who are too young to own credit cards. Most have to use a parent’s card. They want a facility that allows them to spend money. That may come sooner than they think: new ways to take pocket money into cyber (网络的) space are coming out rapidly on both sides of the Atlantic. If successful, these products can stimulate online sales. In general, teenagers spend huge amounts: $153bn (billion) in the US last year and £20bn annually in the UK. Most teenagers have access to the Internet at home or at school-88 percent in the US, 69 percent in the UK. According to the Jupiter Research, one in eight of those with Internet access has bought something online-mainly CDs and books. In most cases, parents pay for these purchases with credit cards, an arrangement that is often unsatisfactory for them and their children. Pressing parents to spend online is less productive than pressing on the high street. They are more likely to ask “Why?” if you ask to spend some money online. One way to help teenagers change notes and coins into cybercash is through prepaid cards such as Internet Cash in the US and Smart cards in the UK. Similar to those for pay-as-you-go mobile telephones, they are sold in amounts such as £20 or $50 with a concealed 14-digit number that can be used to load the cash into an online account. 1.What does the word “They” in paragraph 1 refer to? A. Parents. B. Teenagers. C. Sellers. D. Buyers. 2.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Teenagers pay for goods online with their own credit cards. B. Most teenagers in the US and the UK have bought something online. C. Teenagers found it easier to persuade parents to buy online than in a shop. D. More than half of the teenagers in the US and the UK have Internet access. 3.A new way to help teenagers shop online is to use ______. A. prepaid cards B. special coins and notes C. a new machine D. pay-as-you-go mobile phones 4. What is the passage mainly about? A. Online shopping traps. B. New credit cards for parents. C. The arrival of cyber pocket money. D. Internet users in the US and the UK. B Women have jumped ahead of men for the first time in using the Internet to do their holiday shopping, according to a study published last week in the US. For years men have been more likely to shop on the Internet than women, but during the 2011 holiday season 58 percent of those making online purchases(购买) were women. “It shows how mainstream the Internet is becoming”, said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project group, which carried out the study. Rainie said it was only a matter of time before women shoppers caught up with men. This is because women traditionally make decisions about spending. Users were more likely to shop online to save time. Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 were responsible for some of the most dramatic increases in the online gift-buying population this time around. However, three-quarters of the US Internet users did not buy holiday gifts online in 2011. They worried about credit card security(安全), or just compared online prices with off-line prices, then dashed off to the shops to get the best deals. “But even if shoppers don’t buy online, websites are becoming promotion tools for stores,” said Dan Hess, vice president of Comscore Networks Inc. Hess said that actually most stores’ websites can make customers fully believe the security of their credit card numbers. And most are able to ensure that gifts arrive on time. “It’s all about making the shopping experience more efficient, more reliable and more comfortable.” Hess said. 5. Which of the following statements is true? A. More women shopped online than men during 2011 holiday season. B. There were fewer women online shoppers than men during 2011 holiday season. C. Most of the Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 are women. D. People in the US were more likely to buy gifts online. 6. From the passage we can infer that________. A. men usually decide how to spend money in the family B. women usually decide what to buy in the family C. the Internet is used in all the shops. D. more and more shops will sell their goods online. 7. According to Dan Hess, shopping online is ___________. A. unsafe B. convenient C. a waste of time D. cheaper 8. What can we know from the passage? A. American people only buy gifts in holidays. B. Shopping online is fun for women. C. Shopping off-line provides better service. D. Young people like to do gift-shopping online.
C Music is often thought of as “easy” or “play time”, but it's not that at all. Music plays a very important part in our education. Students who learn music learn a lot of music history at school. This includes “modes (调式)”,which were used in churches during the development of music. They are still used today. Students learn about the historical events that were taking place when the music they play was written. They learn what the music was used for. So much of our culture is in music and has been for centuries. Music also helps with science. Students use science to help them discover what sounds good together and what doesn't. Students also need science to understand something called the “overtone series”, which is about how music is produced by vibration (颤动) and why. Students learn a lot about languages. Many songs are written in other languages, including ancient ones. Students must learn to translate these works to understand what they are singing about. Some songs are famous poems or short works set to music. Students learn a huge amount of coordination (协调) through music, so parts of the body can work better together. Students must use fine motor skills in order to play an instrument. Singers and players must learn breath control and be in good shape to play. Students learn about art. Some famous pieces were written about important works of art, and students learn about the artists and styles as they're playing the music. Music education also brings higher thinking to our children. It allows them to think about complex patterns (How can I make my part sound better? How do this music and these different parts fit together?). Students have to know absolutely what every other musician does at all times. In that way, it develops teamwork. As one can see, music is very important to education besides bringing us fun. 9. Learning music is helpful to the following subjects EXCEPT ________. A. science B. language C. politics D. history 10. Students who learn music have to translate songs ________. A. because they are learning the language B. because they must understand what they are singing about C. because the songs are ancient ones D. because they are famous poems 11. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. Modes are still used in modern music. B. Different kinds of music show different cultures. C. It's easier for athletes to learn to play an instrument. D. A good musician should know the importance of teamwork. 12. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The importance of music. B. The importance of music education. C. Ways to learn music well. D. Skills music students should have. D Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He fell suddenly ill and had to be admitted to the hospital. He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them. One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed(瘫痪)her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.” At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “Thank you for helping me walk.” My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctor, and my dad — who died just a few months after the little girl gave the picture — loved every single child in that hospital. 21.
