One day while on their way to a university, the driver said, “Dr. Einstein, I've heard that lecture more than 30 times. I have learned it by heart and bet(打赌)I could give it myself.” “Well, I'll give you the chances,”said Einstein, “they don't know me at the next school. So when we get there, I'll put on your cap and you introduce yourself as me and give the lecture.” The driver gave Einstein's lecture so wonderfully that he didn't make any mistakes. When he finished, he started to leave, but one of the professors stopped him and asked him a question which was very difficult. The driver thought fast. “The answer to that question is so simple,”he said, “I'm surprised you have to ask me, in fact, to show you just how simple it is, I'm going to ask my driver to come up here and answer your question.” 21.The driver asked Albert Einstein to give him a chance to give lectures because ________. A.he thought the theory of relativity simple B.he didn't understand the theory of relativity at all C.he had heard the lecture so many times that he could recite it D.he wanted to show how well he understood the theory of relativity 22.The driver thought that the professor's question was ________. A.too easy for him to answer B.too difficult for him to answer C.simple enough for Einstein to answer D.so difficult that Einstein couldn't answer it either 23.What do you think of the driver? A.He was a foolish man. B.He was as clever as Einstein. C.He was bright enough to master the theory of relativity. D.He was such a clever man that he fooled the professor and other people. B Most people think zoos are safe for animals, where struggles such as difficulty in finding food and avoiding natural enemies don't exist. Without such problems, animals in zoos should live to an old age. But that may not be true for the largest land animals on earth. Scientists have known that elephants in zoos often suffer from poor health. They develop diseases and behaviour changes. Sometimes, they even become infertile, or unable to have babies. To learn more about how elephants are affected, a team of international scientists compared the life spans of elephants born in zoos with those living outdoors in their native lands. Zoos keep detailed records of all the animals, such as birth dates, illnesses, weight and death. These records made it possible for the researchers to analyse 40 years of data on 800 African and Asian elephants in zoos across Europe. The team found that female African elephants born in zoos lived an average of 16.9 years while those in the wild lived an average of 56 years. Scientists don't yet know why wild elephants seem to be so much better than their zoo-raised elephants. Georgia Mason, a biologist who led the study, thinks stress and obesity (肥胖) may be to blame. Zoo elephants don't get the same kind of exercise they would in the wild, and most are fat. Another finding from the study showed that Asian elephants born in zoos were more likely to die early than Asian elephants caught in the wild and brought to zoos. Mason suggests stress in the mothers in zoos might cause them to have babies that are less likely to survive. 24.Most people think that animals in the zoos ________. A.have difficulty in finding food B.often struggle with each other C.live longer than those in the wild D.will often fight with their enemies 25.What does the underlined word “infertile” mean? A.Without home to stay at. B.Without ability to give birth. C.Without friends to talk with. D.Without anyone to turn to. 26.The scientists carried out a research so that they could know ________. A.how long the elephants live B.how the elephants are affected C.how the elephants can be fed D.how the elephants should be kept 27.In order to let the elephants in the zoos live longer, people should ________. A.give them a good diet B.keep their living place clean and tidy C.get them to exercise as in the wild D.try to keep as quiet as possible C Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age. The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age. “We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK. “Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the ageing process.” What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s. “This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age. 28.The underlined word “longevity” in the second paragraph probably refers to “________”. A.health B.long life C.ageing D.effect 29.The text mainly talks about ________. A.men’s heart cells B.women’s ageing process C.the gender difference D.hearts and long life 30.According to the text, the UK scientists have known that ________. A. women have more cells than men when they are born B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age D. women never lose their pumping power with age 31.We can know from the passage that ________. A. the reason why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart has been found out B. scientists are on the way to finding out why the male heart loses more of the cells C. the team has done something to prevent the male from suffering the greater loss D. women over 70 could lose more heart cells than those at the age of 20 D The old man walked with a cane (拐杖) slowly into the restaurant. His poor jacket, patched (打补丁的) trousers, and worn-out shoes made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning breakfast crowd. Unforgettable were his pale blue eyes that sparkled like diamonds, large rosy cheeks, and thin lips that held a steady smile. He wa | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
