However, when foreigners like Britons and Americans think of Chinese food, their impression of it is different to what you might think. Growing up in the UK, the Chinese food I was used to eating was food I now recognize as being from Guangdong. For example, a typical dish I would order would be pork in sweet and sour sauce, probably with some rice and spring rolls on the side. This is the type of food we generally eat because most Chinese immigrants to the UK have come from Guangdong. British attitudes to Chinese food may be changing, though. Chinese-American chef Ken Hom has been on British TV for 30 years, and he told BBC Food: “Chinese food at the beginning of the 80s (in the UK) was sweet and sour pork, mainly. Most Brits had a very fixed view of Chinese food. But now you are seeing more regional Chinese food from Sichuan, Hunan and other areas of China. It is no longer just Cantonese food.” Similarly, to most Americans, Chinese food doesn’t go too far past orange chicken and fortune cookies, but more regional foods are becoming successful, especially in big cities like New York. Attitudes have not quite changed completely, though. Many foreigners who live in China will be familiar with this question from a relative back at home: “Have they given you dog yet?” Yes, perhaps because people still know too little about Chinese culture, many people believe that Chinese people love to eat dog meat. And of course, some people do eat dogs, which to Americans is like “eating a member of one’s family” according to Vision Times. Also, Chinese people eat many other things people in the West do not — chicken claws, duck heads and some animals’ organs. But what do foreigners think when they come to China and taste real Chinese food? You’ll be glad to know that in my experience, the impressions have been very good. 21. What made it possible for the writer to eat Cantonese food? A. The delicious taste of Cantonese food. B. The writer’s preference for sweet food. C. The easy way of cooking Cantonese food. D. The coming of Chinese immigrants from Guangdong. 22. Which of the following statement is right? A. The writer has very good impressions of Chinese food. B. Americans think Chinese may eat a member of one’s family. C. Foreigners’ attitudes towards Chinese food have changed entirely. D. More regional foods are becoming successful only in big cities like New York. 23. The following paragraphs will probably be talking about . A. the writer’s experience of eating Chinese food B. Chinese people’s impressions of foreign food C. how to appreciate Chinese food D. how to cook Chinese food B After traveling to several places and visiting a good portion of 5 markets, I’ve begun the process of learning how to bargain. However, it is important to realize that bargaining is not a skill you can perfect. It is a piece of art work that will never be completed. However, I’ve taken the time to share what I know about bargaining. Walk into a shop and look around. If I see something I like, (for instance, let’ s say it’ s a bag), I quickly glance over it and focus on something else. At this point, the vendor (卖主) will ask me, “You like? I give you good price.” In response I shake my head and move on. Now, I look at the bag that caught my eye and make sure that it’s worth buying. I continue to look around but now I take the time to examine the vendor’s personality. If the vendor is a boy then things will not be easy. Boys are the most difficult to bargain with because they want as much money as they can get. However, if the vendor is a girl I focus on her face and her clothes. If her face seems satisfied and in a good mood, I continue to look around because she will most probably be flexible in bargaining. If she’s scowling, I just get out of there as fast as I can. Bargaining with an angry vendor is as frightening as being put into a ring with a sumo-wrestler(相扑运动员). After observing her face I then glance over her clothes. If she’s wearing casual jeans, a shirt, and working shoes that means she’s hardworking and simple. If she is wearing relatively nice clothes, that means she’ll probably be greedy when telling me the price because she’ll want to spend as much money as she can to get more clothes. Now let’s say I want to buy the bag but by the looks of the vendor, I am obviously at a disadvantage. I quickly ask the price, tell her to give me his or her last price, tell her my last price and then walk out. 24. It can be inferred that the author . A. is tired of shopping B. is an expert at bargaining C. tries to seek inspiration from bargaining D. will never buy anything from a boy vendor 25. After making sure the bag is worth buying, the writer continues to look around in order to . A. pretend not to be interested in it B. have a second thought to make the final decision C. see whether there are also other things attracting her D. work out the vendor’s characteristics by observing the vendor carefully 26. What does the underlined word “scowling” mean? A. Stubborn B. Angry C. Greedy D. Mean 27. According to the writer, we may probably get a good bargain from . A. a satisfied boy vendor B. an easy-going boy vendor C. a happy and well-dressed girl vendor D. a casually and simply dressed girl vendor C Wonderful Friends, a 3-month-long reality show on Hunan TV, came to an end on March 28th. But the debate it raised is far from dying out. The weekly show interactions between animals and six celebrities (名人) working as zookeepers in Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou. The show is a programming success for Hunan TV. “People are more interested in TV shows with celebrities than in documentaries,” animal protection expert Deng Xuejian told Netease News. “The program is a good way to get people closer to animals.” However, animal welfare advocates (提倡者) say that is exactly what should be avoided. “It is hugely misleading to the public about the needs and welfare of?caged?animals,” Dave Neale of Animals Asia, an?advocacy?group based in Hong Kong, said in a statement. In one scene a baby?chimp?was placed near its father to demonstrate that the older animal would treat the infant as a stranger. The baby becomes annoyed and the?chimp’s father appears anxious and throws a rock at the TV crew. The TV company created “stressful (有压力的) and harmful situations” to make entertaining stories, said the World Association of | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
