In order to know a foreign language thoroughly(完全地), four things are necessary. First, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves, correctly with confidence(自信) and without hesitation(犹豫). Thirdly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are correct in grammar.

There is no short way to succeed in language learning. A good memory(记忆) is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book. It is no much use learning by heart long lists (一览表) of words and their meanings, studying the dictionary and so on . We must learn by using the language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language, We must “Learn through use”. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever(无论何时) we can.

21. The most important things to learn a foreign language are_________.

A. understanding and speaking B. hearing, speaking, reading and writing

C. writing and understanding D. memorizing and listening

22. Someone hears and writes English very well, but he speaks it very badly. This is because ____.

A. he doesn’t understand the language when he hears it spoken

B. he doesn’t have a good memory

C. he always remembers lists of words and their meanings

D. he often hesitates to practise speaking it

23. One can never learn a foreign language well only by________.

A. much practice B. studying the dictionary

C. learning through use D. using the language

24. Which of the following is the most important in learning a foreign language?

A. A good memory B. Speaking

C. Practice. D. Writing.

The other day I came across an article called “Three Words That Guarantee Failure”, and I can’t agree with it more.

It made me think of my old days of preparing applications to schools in the United States. I was working hard to translate my personal statement from Chinese to English at that time, and asked help from Steve, one of the international teachers in my college. I grabbed him a few minutes before his class and asked him to go over my draft, and after scanning he simply said: “You need to rework.” but did not give me much indication on how to make it better.

“Send an email to me as soon as you’ve done with your rework.” He said.

“Ah…” I said. “I will try my best.”

“What?” he looked angry, “you should NEVER EVER say that.” At the moment, the class bell rang. Floods of students passed the building entrance, right where we stood. I felt every single person who passed by staring at me and the old angry man who was shouting in English. My face felt like burning.

“If you say you try something, you’ll NEVER get it done. Do you know that?” he pointed to my draft, “and I’m not interested in spending my time on it.”

“I will make it!” I said loudly, “I will make it!”

His face lit up a bit. “That will work. Send an email to me then.” Before then turning around to the direction of his class, he added, “Remember that.”

I remembered it. And here I am in the United States.

It is true. And I recall it every time when I want to say “I will try”. Do, or do not. There is no “try” if you want to get things done.

25. What are the three words that guarantee failure?

A. I’ll make it. B. I will try. C. Do remember it. D. Never say that.

26. The teacher got angry because _________.

A. the author took too much of his time B. so many students were staring at them

C. he didn’t like to be bothered by others D. the author seemed not to be determined

27. Where is the author now?

A. In the US. B. In Australia. C. In Canada. D. In China.

There once was a little boy who wanted to meet the king. He set off, walking towards the king’s castle. After many long days of walking, the king’s castle came into view. However, as the boy drew closer to the outside of the castle, the guards noticed him.

“Get out of here!” ordered the guards.

Well, the little boy didn’t have to be told twice. He turned… and ran. All he wanted to do was to tell the king wonderful things, and see all the beautiful things in the king’s house. But he couldn’t even get near the castle! The boy finally stopped running, sat down and cried.

A young man happened to be coming down the path at that very moment. He saw the little boy and stopped.

“What’s wrong, young man?” he asked.

“Sir, I walked and walked just to see the king. But these guards made me scared. I wanted to tell the king how lovely everything is and just tell the king that I just wanted to see him!”

The man looked at the little boy thoughtfully. “Look, why don’t you try again. I’ll come with you this time.”

The little boy got up and took the man’s hand. The king’s guards spotted them.

“Look, mister, we don’t have to do this… I don’t want you to get hurt. We can just turn around now.”

The man held the little boy’s hand and went on. The boy really thought the man might be crazy until he looked back up at the guards. They were smiling now! The little boy was amazed!

“Who are you?” asked the little boy in astonishment.

“Why, I’m the King’s Son, You can enter the Castle and be with the King,” said the man.

Dear Francisco Jiménez,

I used to think my dad was too hard on me. Whatever I did just wasn’t good enough for him. I had no idea why he was being so critical of me, After reading your book, The Circuit, I understand my dad better and what he has been trying to tell me.

My dad is an immigrant just like you. He came to the US when he was 14 years old. He spoke broken English, his family had to sleep together in one room, and he had to work to help his family out. He had to earn everything he got.

My dad scolds me about not taking enough initiative(主动性)to learn another language. He says that when he was a kid he had to learn English on his own. I used to not listen to him, but after I read your book, I started to think about what he said differently. I thought about when you chose to stay in for recess(课间休息)at school every day to practice English and when, while you were working in the fields, you looked at your notebook and tried to memorize the English words that you didn’t know. It must have taken a lot of initiative to do that all by yourself.

My dad makes me do extra work even after I have done all of my homework. He says working hard is the only way to get far in life. The Circuit describes the importance of hard work much better than my dad described it. When you won a prize for your butterfly drawing, it made you feel like you were bursting out of your cocoon and you were flying
