Everyone is moved by the true story. An old man was knocked down by a car and was taken to hospital. He was badly hurt, and during his few returns to consciousness(知觉), he repeatedly called for his son. None knew where his son was. A dirty letter was found in his pockets. The nurse learned that his son was a soldier in North Carolina. The hospital called the Red Cross office to find the young man. The young soldier was rushed to the airport in time to catch the plane. It was evening when the young soldier walked into the hospital. A nurse took him to the bedsides of the old man. “Your son is here,” she said to the old man. She had to repeat the words several times before the old man’s eyes opened. He dimly(模糊地) saw the young man and got great comfort. He reached out his hand. The soldier held the old man’s hand and offered words of hope. All through the night the young soldier sat beside the bed. The nurse offered to watch instead of him for a while, he refused. At dawn, the old man died. The nurse started to comfort him but the soldier asked her, “Who was that old man?” “He was your father,” she answered. “No, he wasn’t. I never saw him before. I knew right away there was a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn’t here. I realized I was needed. So I stayed.” 21.What is true about the old man? A. They are connecting to a huge number of other children all over the world. Some are shy "in real life" but are confident to communicate with others online; others find support from people of their own age on relationship problems, or problems at home. Sometimes the online world, just like the real world, can introduce problems, such as cheating or arguments. Going online is great fun, but there are also a few people who use the Internet to do bad things. Children must know that there are both the good things and the dangers on the Internet. To keep children safe your management must cover the family computer. Just as you decide which TV programs are suitable, you need to do the same for the websites and chatrooms your children visit. Remind your children that online friends are still strangers and there are dangers too. Computer studies are part of schoolwork now, so it's likely that your children may know more than you do. We get left behind when it comes to the interactive areas of websites, like chatrooms and message boards, which are especially strange. The language of chat is strange to many parents, too. Chatters love to use abbreviations (缩写) such as: atb--all the best, bbfn--bye bye for now, culSer—see you later, gr8--great, Idk--I don't know, imbl--it must be love, kit--keep in touch, paw--parents are watching, lol-- laugh out loud, xlnt--excellent! It seems like another language, and it is! 24. The passage is meant for A. children B. teachers C. parents D. Net bar owners 25. In order to keep children safe online, you'd better A. not allow them to use the Internet B. surf the Internet together with them C. teach them to use correct Net words D. choose suitable websites and chatrooms for them 26. If you stand beside him when your son is chatting about something secret online, he may use A. bbfn B. 1ol C cul8er D. paw 27. Which of the following will the author probably agree with? A. The chat language is strange to adults. B. The Internet is not good for children. C. Children can chat so much online. D. The Internet is a good place for children. C Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, you are communicating quite fluently, but: Listening is STILL a problem! First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening comprehension is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. The first step is to find listening resources. The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The RealPlayer from RealMedia.com. The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station. Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated (懊恼) by limited understanding. What should you do? Here is some of the advice I give my students: ●Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything. ●Stay relaxed when you do not understand — even if you continue not to understand for a long time. ●Do not translate what you hear into your native language. ●Listen for the general idea of the conversation. Don’t concentrate on detail until you have understood the main ideas. I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn’t understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. Then, after the first six months, I discovered two very important facts. Firstly, translating creates a wall between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that — even if I didn’t pay much attention, I could usually understand what the speaker had said. 28. The best way to improve our listening is to _____. A. practise as much as possible B. find as many listening resources as possible C. use the Internet like a radio station D. speak naturally and read as much as possible 29. Which of the following is a good habit when listening? A. Try to understand everything. B. Try to get the main ideas. C. Pay much attention to details. D. Translate each word in your mind. 30. Why did the writer mention his / her experience in Germany? A. To prove the importance of translating. B. To show the problems of speaking a foreign language. C. To tell us the importance of staying calm. D. To point out an ineffective method of listening. 31. The underlined part “a wall” in the last paragraph refers to “_____”. A. a communication barrier (障碍) B. culture shock C. language understanding D. a little misunderstanding D Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances(环境) don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is. However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in. This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it. When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway. Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction(沉溺), and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent(经常的), hard work won’t guarantee(保证) you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become rally good at whatever it is you put all that work into. 32. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about__________. A. the reasons for success B. the meaning of success C. the standards(标准) of success D. the importance of success 33. In paragraph 2, the underlined word that refers to__________. A. being good at something B. setting a practical goal C. putting in more time D. succeeding in life 34. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because_____________. A. work makes one feel pain B. one tends to enjoy his work C. one gives up his work easily D. it takes a lot of time to succeed 35. What is the main theme (主题)of the passage? A. Having a goal is vital(重要的) to success. B. Being good is different from being great. C. One cannot succeed without time and practice. D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Symbol of friendship Friendship is a wonderful thing to have no matter how old you are | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
