One Tuesday, we got up, had breakfast and got ready for school. We picked up our school bags and went to school. I opened my school bag to get my homework after I went into the classroom and sat down. My school homework needed to be handed in. But it was not there! I remembered I had put it in my school bag.

I thought back to Monday afternoon. I finished my school homework, put it in my school bag, and went out to play softball with the neighbor kids. My sister Sara was not out playing as usual. She read a book inside the house. She must have taken my homework while I was playing softball outside as no kids came inside our house on Monday.

After school I ran to the place where my sister and I usually meet. There was Sara. She didn't seem to be laughing at me. She is good at giving false information. "Sara, what have you done with my homework?" I asked. She said she hadn't seen it! "What should I do?" I thought. I waited for a chance to talk to Mom.

In Mom ' s room, I cried and shouted: I couldn't help shaking. I told her about my missing school homework. Hearing this, Mom left the room, went into the kitchen hurriedly and started looking in the trash. She pulled my school homework out of the trash! Mom said, "I' m sorry, Teri. I saw that your school bag was too heavy, so I cleaned it out for you. Your homework didn't look any different from the waste paper which I threw away."

I realized that I had misunderstood my sister. I apologized to her. And I learnt a good lesson from this experience.

Do you dream of changing the world with your words? Or maybe you just want to be able to express your thoughts and ideas more clearly. Anyway, it's more important for us to write correctly and properly. Then how to improve your English writing skills? www.gkstk.com

Get the most out of your dictionary by understanding how to use it correctly. You can use a good English dictionary to find words, for meaning, for pronunciation, to check your spelling and to understand explanations. If you are using a computer, use an English spell checker (but don't rely on it).

Copy short passages of English text from newspapers, magazines or books.

Try dictation exercises. You can do this online or get friends to read out text for you to write. Then check your writing-pay more attention to spelling.

There are many forums (论坛) on the Internet. Find one about your interests or hobbies. Observe the niceties(细微的差别) of forum use, and make an apology if you think you have made any mistakes. Be careful about using abbreviations when writing on forums. They are fun and quick but can also make you pick some bad habits.

Use a blog to create a diary about your life. Write it in English and if you have a thick skin, ask for feedback (反馈). Remember blogs are not private, so do not write anything there that you do not want the whole world to read. I advise http://www.blogger.com, which is free and very easy to use.

Check what you've written. Even better, get someone else to read what you've written ahead of time.

Try to find pen friends who are native English speakers. Write to them, use a messenger service like MSN, Yahoo, Google or find a chat-room. If you can't get in touch with native speakers then contact other learners.

25. Which of the following does the author agree with?

A. You can do dictation exercises online.

B. You mustn't make mistakes in the forums.

C. You should show your real life words on blogs.

D. Your friends should show your real life words on blogs.

A. if you're good at writing your blog

B. if you have made some mistakes

C. if you don't mind your mistakes being discovered

D. if you want to know more about others' life

27. According to the passage, how many ways are related with computers?

A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.

In 1900, an American engineer called John Elfreth Watkins made a number of predictions about what the world would be like in 2000. So what did Watkins get right and wrong 100 years later?

1. Digital color photography

"Photographs will be telegraphed from any distance. If there is a battle in China a hundred years hence, snapshots of its most striking events will be published in the newspapers an hour later _ Photographs will reproduce all of nature's colors."

Watkins did not, of course, use the word "digital" or describe precisely how digital cameras and computers would work, but he accurately predicted how people would come to use new photographic technology. When Watkins was making his predictions, it took a week for a picture of something happening in China to make its way into Western papers.

2. Mobile phones

"Wireless telephone and telegraph circuits will span the world. A husband in the middle of the Atlantic will be able to converse with his wife sitting in her boudoir in Chicago. We will be able to telephone to China as readily as we now talk from New York to Brooklyn."

International phone calls were unheard-of in Watkins's, day. It was another 15 years before the first call was made, by Alexander Bell even from one coast of the US to the other.

The idea of wireless telephony was truly revolutionary.

3. Pre-prepared meals

"Ready-cooked meals will be bought from establishments similar to our bakeries of today.“

The popularity of ready meals in supermarkets and takeaway shops suggests that Watkins was right although he supposed that the meals would be delivered on plates which would be returned to the cooking establishments to be washed.

4. Hothouse vegetables

"Winter will be turned into summer and night into day by the farmer with electric wires under the soil and large gardens under glass."

Large gardens under glass were already a reality, but he was correct to predict the use of electricity. Although colored lights and electric currents did not take off, they were probably experimented with.

28. In 1900, Watkins predicted accurately _______.

A. a war would break out in China one century later

B. photos would reach the other side of the earth via the Internet

C. how digital cameras and computers would work

D. people would use new photographic technology

29. According to the second prediction, we can surely say 100 years ago_______ .

A. people had easy access to international telephone calls

B. people could conveniently make a call from New York to Brooklyn

30. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Ready-cooked meals were popular 100 years ago.

B. Watkins predicted plates would be washed before they were returned.

C. Watkins would carry out experiments to test his predictions.

D. Large gardens under glass had been put in use 100 years ago.

31. What will most probably be discussed in the next part of the passage?

A. Some wrong predictions from Watkins.

B. Some predictions for the next century.

C. Great changes that took place in the 20th century.

D. Comments on Watkins ' s predictions from all walks of life.

Scientists explain why people often blame others when things don't work out. Researchers say that when it comes to fixing blame, we can't always trust our own judgment .When things go wrong and we're to blame, we 're supposed to feel guilty. Right? Not necessarily.

It turns out that when we do something that causes a negative result, we actually feel less responsible (有责任的) for our actions. But we see the entire situation differently if things turn out well.

The "blame game” is nothing new. Behavior experts have long known that people push responsibility to others, or to outside factors, when things don't work out. But the new research shows that this reaction is more than about wanting to escape blame. We actually don't believe that what happened is our fault.

To learn more about the "blame game", researchers conducted a study. They asked 34 people to press keys that produced three different noises. The noises were positive (amusement, laughter), negative (fear, upset, or anger), or neutral (中立的).

The volunteers were asked to try to judge the time that it took between when they pushed the button and when they heard the sounds. Volunteers felt there was longer time between their actions and the negative sounds than that between their actions and the positive ones. In their minds, the negative results were separate from their actions. Therefore, they were able to feel less responsible for them.

The findings suggest that perhaps more of us need to realize that unpleasant or negative situations may actually be our fault - even if we don't see it that way. And taking mo
