Volunteering means working for free to help someone else. Mrs. Obama says volunteering is very important. “It should be part of everyone’s life,” she says. Many teens agree. They say that helping others feels great and makes a difference. These days, more teens volunteer than work for pay. Teens clean up parks, walk dogs at animal shelters, visit the elderly and more. Some cities ---- including Seattle, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. ----require high school students to volunteer. Students must volunteer in order to graduate. The student volunteers learn new skills and help their communities. Many parents are in favor of the idea ---- they say volunteering helps teens build job skills. But most teens don’t want to be forced to volunteer. They say they are busy. And they say volunteering is only fun if it’s a choice. Read both sides of the debate and decide. YES Volunteering can help teens get into college or get a job. Many cities and towns need help. Volunteers can help keep important programs going. Not all teens will volunteer if it isn’t required. Schools should require students to do all they can to get ready for adult life. NO Most teens are already very busy with classes, homework, jobs and sports. Forcing them to do more isn’t fair. It should be up to each person. Helping out doesn’t feel as good if you have to do it. Finding a volunteer job isn’t always easy. Students shouldn’t be kept from graduating because of something they can’t control. B La Gomera is the only place in the world which has a whistle (口哨)language. We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island. But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language. There are many deep valleys on the island. A person on one side of a valley can not easily shout to a person on the other side. But he can whistle and be heard. Some of the best whistlers can be heard from four miles away and the record is seven miles. The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers. We can understand why the whistle language continues. It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of telephone. If the sick person is quite far away from the town, people pass the message from one to another. A boy guarding cattle on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat. The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town. People help one another in the same way when a car breaks down or a cow is lost. The whistle language is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live on for hundreds of years more. Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in different parts of a country. But on La Gomera you are nobody if you cannot whistle. Perhaps soon after TV arrives on the island, people there will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions. 25. If a person on La Gomera is ill,______. A. others will phone the doctor in town B. people will take him to town by carriage C. his family will take him to the hospital D. the whistle language will help pass the message to the doctor 26. La Gomera is special because ______. A. many visitors go there every year B. no visitors have ever been there C. people there have special ears to hear whistles D. people there use the whistle language to communicate with each other 27. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. It is not easy for a person to live on La Gomera if he cannot whistle. B. The whistle language can only be found on La Gomera. C. The whistle language has been used for hundreds of years on the island, but will not be used any longer. D. The record shows that one best whistler can be heard others seven miles away. 28. Which of the following will be the best title of this passage? A. The Secret Language B. Do You Know the Whistle Language? C. The Life of Islanders D. La Gomera一a Mystery C There are many fun, free activities that you can do as a family. All that is required is a bit of imagination and some time. And the best part is that these are the kind of fun, family memories a child will remember for a lifetime. Family Game Night Kids often get games for Christmas or birthdays, and would love to have a chance to play with their family. Or, make up some games of their own. Charades(字谜游戏)is a fun game that will challenge children to use their imagination. Divide the family into teams and let each team come up with words and the other has to act out. Family Art Time Pick some time for the family to sit down and come up with their own art. It doesn’t need to be just a drawing-take some old magazines, let the kids cut out pictures and paste them into their own shape. Or let them use leaves, branches and whatever else they can find to make something from their imagination. Family Picnic Taking the family for a picnic is a great way for some fun that doesn’t cost any money. If the weather is nice, take them to a park or playground and let them have a day of playing. Family Field Trip A family field trip doesn’t have to cost a cent. Ask a nearby farm if you can bring your kids out for a tour and to see some of the animals. Or take them to a park to find certain items from nature. Ask a local business if you could bring the family for a tour to see how things work-you might be surprised at the number of people who would be excited to share what they do with others, and it could be an interesting lesson for kids. 31. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ______. A. you may share your own experience with workers B. It costs a lot to visit a park for a family C. all the people will be excited to share what they have with you D. you should ask for permission from the farm owner 32. The passage is mainly intended for ______. A. teachers B. teenagers C. tourists D. parents D Worried about how many calories you will get in that piece of pizza, chocolate cake or bag of chips? A new iPhone application (应用程序) MealSnap may help. Users just need to take a picture of the meal with the phone, and it will give a calorie read-out almost immediately. MealSnap was developed by DailyBurn, a health social network that focuses on helping its users lead healthier lifestyles. It has created several other health and diet-related iPhone applications. The application gives users a quick reply. To do that, it matches the taken picture to a databank (数据库) with the calorie information of nearly 500,000 kinds of food. Users then get the range of calories for the meal that is photographed. We started with something simple—an apple. A couple of minutes later, the application replied that it was an apple and between 64 and 96 calories. More impressive was the reply we received after sending a photo of a mixed salad bowl. MealSnap replied that the bowl contained “yellow rice with | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
