When I began to discover what other people’s lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true importance of reading. My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn’t know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule, she told me it would not help because she could not read it. She said she also had difficulty even if she got to the supermarket because sometimes she couldn’t remember what she needed. Since she did not know words, she could not write out a shopping list. She could only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a new label(商标), she would not recognize it as the product she wanted. As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie’s self-confidence, which encouraged her to continue with the study. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take a bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she said how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. She sat with him before he went to sleep and they would read bedtime stories together. When his eyes became wide with excitement as she read, pride was written over her face, and she began to see how her own hard work in learning to read paid off. As she described this experience, I was proud of myself as well. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before. B Playing video games could help to correct “lazy eye” syndrome in teenagers. “Lazy eye” is a visual disorder that develops in early childhood. Affected children are not able to focus properly with one of their eyes and the other eye will make up for this, making the affected eye “lazy”. It had been thought that the condition could not be corrected if it wasn’t detected (发现) and treated before a child reached 11. However, a new study found the condition could be improved in children aged 10 to 18 by playing computer games. Researcher Somen Ghosh found that 30 percent of sufferers reported “significant vision gains” after playing at least an hour of video games per day, when combined with normal clinical treatment. A further 60 percent showed at least some improvement. Ghosh said, “We should never give up on our patients, even the older children, but instead offer them hope and treatment to help them achieve better vision.” Dr. Ghosh began by treating four groups of 10 to 18-year | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
