交通标志

　　当你驾车或步行走在道路上时，除要认识交通标志、遵守交通规则外，还要思考如何用英语进行表达。下面我们一起来认识交通标志及其英语表达方式。

　　一、警示标志（Warning Signs）

　　警告车辆（vehicles）、行人（pedestrians）注意危险地点的标志。其形状为等边三角形，颜色为黄底、黑边、黑图案。如：

　　对车辆或行人禁止或加以限制的标志。形状为圆形，颜色为白底，红圈，红杠，黑图案。如：

交通标志及其意义

　　1. Sign No. ① tells people to go straight on.

　　交通标志①告诉人们可一直往前走。

　　交通标志②告诉人们此处可向右转弯。

　　3. When we see Sign No. ③  we know we can’t turn left here.

　　交通信号类小史

　　维持繁华城市交通秩序的功臣，除了交通警察（traffic police）外，就要算交通信号灯（traffic signal lamp）了。1868年12月10日，伦敦市里奇大街和警察厅拐角处一根7米高的钢柱上，装上了铁路信号工程师奈特（Night）发明的交通信号装置。它有红绿两种颜色，红色表示“停止”；绿色表示“当心”。由于这种信号灯燃烧煤气（gas），因而很不安全，在它安装使用后的第23天就发生了爆炸，负责转灯的警察因此丧生。

　　第一个电动红绿交通信号灯（electric traffic signal lamp）于1914年8月5日在美国的俄亥俄州（Ohio）投入使用。现代的三色交通信号灯（three-colour traffic signal lamp）于 1918年在纽约出现，它安装在街上的交通岗亭（traffic box）上，显示红绿黄三色灯光，用人工控制。不久，汽车城底特律（Detroit）和英国伦敦（London）等大城市也安装了这种三色交通信号灯。到20世纪30年代，具有一定时间间歇明灭能力的自动交通信号灯出现了。此后，交通信号灯开始在全世界的大小城市安家落户。

　　交通信号灯一般用于陆路市镇的交通，但在名闻遐迩的世界水城威尼斯（Venice），它却安装在许许多多的交通水道交叉处，给威尼斯的夜景又增添了一份魅力。

　　Do you use those self-stick notepapers that come in yellow and other colours? In 1970, a man named Spencer Silver was a scientist at the 3M company in America. He was trying to invent a strong glue that would stick everything together. But his new glue turned out to be very weak! It would stick things together but they could easily be pulled apart. No one knew what to do with this glue.

　　Four years later, another scientist needed something to keep his place in a music book. He put some of Silver's weak glue on small pieces of paper and stuck them on his pages. Later, he could just pull the paper off and not hurt the pages. Now, Post-it Notes are used all over the world.
