Step 1 Revision
1 Check the homework exercises.
2 Get Ss to have a dialogue like the
one in Part 2 g of Lesson 88, in pairs,
with their books shut.
Step 2 Presentation
SB Page 61, Part 1. For a change, approach
this text with very little preparation.
In the exam, Ss will have to understand
what a text is about without teacher support,
so this is good practice. Get Ss to talk
about the picture and describe what they
can see.
Step 3 Reading for general understanding
Read aloud the two general comprehension
questions. Allow the Ss enough time to
read the text. Put them in pairs to discuss
their answers, then check the answers
with the class. (1 They were walking in
the hills. 2 They got lost in the clouds,
walked downhill, took shelter in a cave
and lit a fire.)
Step 4 Reading
SB Page 62, Part 2. Go through the exercise
and make sure the Ss know what to do.
Let them read the whole passage carefully
again and do the task, working in pairs
or small groups. Check the answers with
the whole class.
Step 5 Reading aloud
Speech Cassette Lesson 89. Play the
tape of the passage for the Ss to listen
and follow. Play the tape of part of the
passage once more; this time the Ss listen
and repeat. Pay attention to stress and
intonation, and the sentence stress of
longer sentences.
Step 6 Interview
SB Page 62, Part 3. Read the instructions
for this interview activity aloud. Divide
the class in half. Half the class are
going to play the role of the interviewer;
they work in pairs to prepare questions.
Half the class are going to play the role
of one of the children; they work in pairs
to prepare answers to the questions. After
three minutes preparation, Ss move and
find a partner for the interview. Encourage
Ss to invent any other details as they
wish.
Step 7 Workbook
Wb Lesson 89, Exx. 1 - 4.
Ex. 1 can be used for consolidation
of the text. Ss have to re-read the text
in order to answer the questions. Let
them work in pairs first. Then call out
some pairs to give their questions and
answers.
Ask the Ss to do Ex. 2 individually.
Then check the answers with the whole
class. Ex. 3 can be done orally in class.
If time permits, allow Ss some time to
prepare to retell the story about the
two boys. Then ask some of them to retell
the story. Each of them may say one or
two sentences. When they find it hard
to continue, ask questions to help them.

answers below as though they are the only
“correct” ones.

Step 2 Grammar study
SB Page 65, Part 1. Go through the Grammar
study section with the class, getting
students to translate the sentences. Do
not spend time revising the simpler structures,
as students should know these. Draw attention
to any difficult points suggested below.
If students have difficulty, do not spend
too much time explaining. Instead, prepare
a short revision exercise and produce
it in class when you revise the grammatical
category in the next lesson.
Step 3 Grammar practice
SB Page 65, Part 2. Explain that students
must translate the Chinese part into English
to complete these sentences.
Do the first two sentences orally with
the whole class, then get Ss to work through
the exercise in pairs. Check the answers
at the end.
Step 4 Workbook
Wb Lesson 91, Exx. 1 - 3.Ex. 1 can be
done in pairs first. Then check the answers
with the whole class. Get Ss to translate
the sentences and point out the Adverbial.
Ex. 2 is a reading comprehension exercise.
Allow the Ss enough time to read through
the passage. Make explanation if necessary.
Then get Ss to discuss the questions in
pairs. Finally check the answers with
the whole class.
In order to be able to retell the story
in this unit, Ss may use the questions
in Ex. 1 of Wb Lesson 89 and Lesson 90
as a guide. Let the. Ss work in groups
of four. Finally call out several Ss to
do Ex. 3. If they have any problems, give
them some help.

Step 2 Preparation for listening
SB Page 66, Part 1. Wb Listening,
Unit 23. Tell the Ss In the two texts
in. this unit, we read the story about
two young people who discovered a cave.
Now we're going to listen to the end
of the story. Then make sure the Ss
understand what to do in Ex. 1.
Step 3 Listening
Listening Cassette Unit 23. Do each
exercise in turn. Play the tape, then
let Ss discuss their answers in pairs.
Play the tape again if necessary, then
check the answers with the whole class.

Demonstrate this activity by talking
about your discovery of the cave. If
you like, you can say:I guess that a
whole group of people lived here. They
must have spent a lot of time doing
these paintings. It seems that there
were deer living here at that time.
It looks as if they had stone tools.Do
Wb Lesson 92, Ex. 1. Then put the Ss
in pairs and let them practise.

Before doing Ex. 2, go over the phrases
in the box.
When you are sure the Ss understand
them, ask some of them to complete the
sentences with suitable phrases.
Get the Ss to do Ex. 3 in pairs. Tell
them to pay great attention to the set
expressions, sentence structures and
verb tenses when translating the sentences.
It is not good trying to do word-for-word
translation. Check the answers with
the whole class.
Step 6 Checkpoint
Go through the Grammar study section
in the previous lesson. Revise
the Adverbial, especially if any Ss
had difficulties, and deal with any
language points that you or the Ss wish
to raise.
Step 7 Test
Give the Ss the following test to
practise the Adverbial.

have to fill in each gap with a suitable
word. Explain that some of the words
are used more than once and that others
are not used at all. Let the Ss do this
exercise individually, then check their
answers in pairs.
Step 9 Writing
SB Page 66, Part 4. The aim of this
task is to practise writing a narrative,
using the different tenses correctly.
Prepare for the writing task in the
following way. Let the Ss practise orally
in groups of four, then get them to
write their story either in class or
for homework.
