Teaching Objectives:
Grasp the new grammar: The Past Continuous Tense.
Language focus:
1. The Past Continuous Tense.
This tense is used to denote something happened at a particular .specific time in the past.
1) Statement forms
①I/He/She/It was working.
②You/We/They were working.
2) Question forms
①What was I/he/she/it doing?
②What were we/you/they doing?
2. Useful expressions
try to do sth. ,in the future, quite a nice. . . , play with, I hope so.
Properties: Tape-recorder, Overhead projector,some pictures about action,多媒体视频。
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Revision
Have the students tell stories about famous persons they know.
Step 2 Presentation
Perform an action: closing the door. Ask the students What am I doing? Get them to answer You’re closing the door.
Repeat with other action (drawing a picture, closing the window, cleaning the blackboard, etc.).
Step 3 Ask and answer
Showing the students the picture, say: It’s Monday. The students are drawing some pictures on the blackboard. What are they drawing?

Get the students to say Han Mei is drawing a cat. Jim is drawing a lion, etc.
Then get them to act and answer in pairs.
A: What is Li Lei drawing?
B: He is drawing an elephant.
… …
Step 4 Read and act
Play the tape for the students to listen and repeat.(or play the video: Lesson93情景对话)Ask What is Li Lei drawing? What does the teacher think about the elephant?
Let the students guess the meaning of painter.
Explains the phrases:
1. try to do sth.
The boy is trying to climb the tall tree.
2. quite a nice. . .
He owns quite a nice car.
Play the tape again. Get the students to read the dialogue in pairs and then act it out.
Step 5 Presentation
1. Showing the picture again and say: Now it’s Wednesday. When did the children draw the pictures on the blackboard? (Monday)
Present this dialogue.
A: What was Li Lei drawing when the teacher came in?
B: He was drawing an elephant.
Repeat for Han Mei, Jim and Lily and Lucy.
2. Get the students to play the part of B.
3. Point out the form (was/were + ing form of the verb)
4. Writes “now”, “at the moment” on the blackboard and helps students to make sentences with them. Then writes “when the teacher came in” “at four o'clock yesterday” on the blackboard, helps students to say I was doing my homework when the teacher came in.
Then students read the sentences given and answer questions in pairs.
Step 6 Read and learn
Get through the questions with the students, then let them ask and answer in pairs.
What was Han Mei drawing when the teacher came in?
First the teacher can play the video: Lesson 93 Read and learn. Then ask the students to practise in pairs.
Step 7 Exercises in class
Answer the questions with the following phrases.
What were you doing when I called yesterday?
l) do homework 2) wash the dishes 3) watch TV 4) write a letter 5) put on my clothes 6) make the bed

2) I was washing the dishes.
3) I was watching TV.

Fill in the blanks with proper tenses:

Step 1 Leading-in
请三位同学到前面来,分别做出扫地、读书、写字等动作。教师依次提问:
T:What are you doing?
S1:I’m sweeping the floor.
S2:I’m reading a book.
S:I’m writing.
教师手指这三位同学,依次问大家:
T:What is he/she doing?
学生按照实际情景,依次答出:
S2: He is sweeping the floor. She is reading a book. He is writing.
教师要求全班将三个人的动作分别记清楚。
Step 2 Presentation
就刚才三位同学的动作,向全班提问:What was ×××doing when I came in?
重复两至三遍,板书这个句式,用彩色粉笔标出was,启发大家猜测句子的含义,并引导全班回答:
He was sweeping the floor.
She was reading a book.
He was writing.
板书上述三个答句,启发学生观察谓语部分的变化,并简要介绍一下过去进行时态所表示的含义。
Step 3 Ask and answer
借助课文插图或出示图片,让学生练习表达图中人物的活动。
T: It’s Monday. The students are drawing some pictures on the blackboard. Now let’s look at the picture. What are they doing?
让学生表达图中的各个学生正在进行的活动,并让他们表演出来。
A: What is Li Lei drawing?
B: He is drawing an elephant.
Han Mei is drawing a cat.
Step 4 Read and act
播放视频:Lesson93情景对话,问:What is Li Lei drawing?
或放对话录音。教师给出听前提问(Pre-reading questions):
What is Li Lei doing?
放录音一遍,学生回答问题。
然后让学生就图中其他的学生进行对话练习并表演。
Step 5 Read and learn
告诉学生Now it’s Wednesday. 指着图片问:What did the students do on Monday?
出示对话:
A: What was Li Lei drawing when the teacher came in?
B: He was drawing an elephant.
试着让学生就其他几位同学进行替换练习。
然后引导学生从上面的句子中理解过去进行时的用法,并总结出其构成形式:was/were +v -ing
并引导学生对过去进行时和前面的现在进行时进行比较:
is/am/are +v-ing
was/were +v –ing
Then let the students read the sentences given and answer questions in pairs.
或者播放视频:Lesson 93 Read and learn,然后让学生进行模仿练习。
Step 6 Practice
指导学生两人一组做课文第3部分练习。教师先与一位程度较好的学生表演以下对话:
T: What was Li Lei doing when the teacher came in?
S: He was drawing a picture.
T: What was he drawing?
S: He was drawing an elephant.
T: What was he drawing on?
S: He was drawing on the blackboard.
全班两人一组,就Meimei及the twins进行内容相似的问答练习,请几组同学表演。
教师出示事先准备好的图片,就上面的人物及活动与学生进行问答练习。

Language focus:
get on (well) with sb., disturb in the city of, take off, try to do sth., find it+ adj. +to do sth, be angry with sb. ,knock at, drop sth. on the floor, wake(sb.) up, as usual, fall asleep.

Tape-recorder, Overhead projector, 挂图和表达动作的图片。
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Revision
1.Revise the forms of the Past Continuous Tense.
教师可提供一些表示动作的图片,告诉学生一个过去时间,让他们表达出来。如:
What was she doing when I call her last night?
She was eating.
The girls were
dancing at 8:00 yesterday morning.
教师还可以先做一个动作,做完后问:What was I doing? 并让几位同学做些动作,完成后问其他的学生:What was he/she doing? What were they doing?
最后让学生相互询问过去某个时刻干了些什么事情。
What were you doing at nine o’clock yesterday?
What were your parents doing when you came home from school yesterday?
Step 2 Leading-in
Show two pictures to the students and let them guess the meaning of the story.
教师问学生是否看过马三立的相声小段,可让知道这个相声的学生来讲讲这个笑话。然后告诉学生这篇课文的内容与相声笑话内容相似。
Have the students discuss the pre-reading questions. Guess the meaning of get on well with. Explain the meaning of ever.
Have the students give ways in which their neighbours disturb them. Then have them think of ways that can solve the problems.
Step 3 Presentation
First introduce the story:
This is a Russian story. It comes from Russia. 帮助学生了解Russia大概地理位置。然后出示图片教学新词汇Moscow。
This is a city of Moscow. It’s the capital of Russia.
This story is about a man who lived in a tall building in Moscow. He liked living there. It was usually very quiet, and he could see the park from his window. There was one problem for him. That is, he couldn’t sleep well.
利用挂图或图片教授新词汇upstairs, downstairs, boot, take off等。
Explain the meaning by gestures or pictures, e.g. bang,
sound, be angry with.
Step 4 Reading
Have the students read the story quickly and find out why he couldn’t sleep.
Play the tape for the students to listen. Answer Did the man downstairs sleep well the next evening?
教师可播放视频文件:The man upstairs,加深学生对整个故事的理解。
Answer the following questions.
1.Where did this story happen?
2. How did he try to solve the problem?
3. Was the problem solved successfully?
Explain words and phrases: be angry with, find it + adj. + to do sth., as usual and so on.
Play the tape again. Get the students to listen and repeat.
Step 5 Practice
对一组学生逐个提问,这组学生每次回答一个问题;从另外一组中找出一位同学,依次将每个同学及他前面同学的答案像雪球似的复述下来。例如:
T:Where did the man live?
S1: The man lived in a tall building in the city of Moscow.
S0: The man lived in a tall building in the city of Moscow.
T: Why did he like to live there?
S2: Because it was usually very quiet and he could see the park from his window.
S0: The man lived in a tall building in the city of Moscow. He liked living there because it was usually very quiet and he could see the park from his window.
T: What did the man upstairs always do when he came home every night?
S3: The man upstairs always took off his shoes and threw them on the floor.

扮演S0的角色,一次可以是一个人;可以是一个组;也可以是班上其他学生。刚开始练习时,问题不宜一次提得过多,三至五个即可,逐步过渡。此外,较难回答的问题要注意修改,通常不使用一般疑问句(除非学生掌握更灵活的方法)。
Step 6 Discussion
Get the students to discuss these questions.
1. What will you do if you were the man in the story?
2. How can you get on well with your neighbors?
3. Do your neighbors ever do anything that disturbs you?
4. Have you ever done anything good or bad to your neighbors?

Step 1 Revision
1. Act out the play about neighbourhood relationship. Other students answer the question “What were they doing in the play?”.
2. Revise the Past Continuous Tense by performing actions, such as: cleaning the floor, closing the window.
What was I doing? What was he/she doing? What were they doing?
Step 2 Presentation
Draw this time table on the blackboard. (or on a flashcard) as a model:

Present this dialogue:
A: What was Li Lei doing at half past nine yesterday morning?
B: He was reading.
Get the students to practise the dialogue with other time. Repeat it for Han Mei instead of Li Lei.

Step 3 Ask and answer
Students ask and answer the questions in pairs.
Then get the students to draw a time line showing what they were doing at a certain period of time last Sunday. Have them ask and answer about what they were really doing.
Explain the word: PE, chemistry, sweep
Step 4 Practice
Show the students the picture and say: One Sunday morning the man upstairs heard the sound of children playing in the park. What did he see when he looked out of his window.
Now look at the picture, what were the children and other people doing?
Explain the using of playing in the park.
Get the students to ask and answer in pairs.
A: What was the man doing?
B: He was selling the fruit.
The boys were playing basketball.

Play the video: 过去进行时, Get the students to act in pair.
Step 5 Exercise
Ask questions.

Step 1 Revision
First get the students ask what were they doing at a certain time yesterday with each other.
What were you doing at eight o’clock yesterday night?
I was doing my homework.
Show the students some pictures and Get them to answer the question “What were they doing?”
或者让学生准备一些他们自己的照片,然后谈谈照片中自己那时在干什么?如:
A: What were you doing in the picture?
B: I was reading a story book.
In the picture Li Lei was swimming in the river.
Step 2 Listening
Listen to the tape and make sure the students understand what to do.
Play the tape again. Then finish the Exercise one on page 118. Let them check their answer in pairs.
Step 3 Read and say
Say: I am a policeman. Yesterday morning a man was killed. I want to know what you were doing at ten o’clock yesterday morning.
Then teacher goes around the classroom, asks the questions “What’s your name? What do you do? What were you doing at ten o’clock yesterday morning? Who was with you at that moment?” Students may answer the questions with the sentences given or they may make up their own answers.
First read through the directions. 让学生选择不同的职业的人的答语。
Then, students make u dialogues like this:
A: What was the driver doing?
B: He was driving a truck to Tianjin.
Step 4 Practice
播放视频文件:Lesson 96情景演示,展示过去进行时的运用。

Here is another situation for the students to practise. A very famous drawing was stolen in the art gallery last night. You are trying to find out who did that. You can ask the question “What were you doing at nine o’clock last night?” After everyone has answered the question, the class discuss together, “Who do you think stole the painting from the gallery? Why?”
Step 5 Read and talk
Read the table about what David was doing at different times yesterday, then ask and answer in pairs.
A: What was he doing at three thirty yesterday afternoon?
B: He was playing basketball.

Have each student write out their own time table of what they did yesterday. Then they can ask and answer questions according to their own time table.
Step 6 Writing
Get the students to write a paragraph about what they were doing at a certain time/during a period of time yesterday.
教师可让学生参照Part 3列出昨天的时刻表,然后根据表中的时间提示写出昨天这些时间正在干什么。
Step 7 Reading
Say: We've talked about the relationship among neighbours. Now we re going to read another story about how neighbours get on with each other.
Play the tape for the students to listen.(或播放视频:A bad neighbour)Ask How do you think the neighbour wasn’t a good neighbour?
Learn new words by showing pictures. (scissors, racket)
Play the tape again for the students to listen and repeat. Then answer these questions:
1. Why were Masha and Sasha tired of Misha?
2. What did Masha borrow today?
3. Did Sasha want to lend him?
4. What did Sasha decide to do?
5. How did Sasha do?
6. What do you think happened at last?
7. What will you do if you were Sasha?
Step 8 Discussion
Students talk about the story and the people in the story and discuss what a person should or should not do in the neighbourhood.
People shouldn't make too much noise after 11:00 at night.
