Famous for her heroic role in helping slaves escape through the Underground Railroad, Hamet

Tubman also found a home in Canada. When the U.S. Fugitive Slave Act came into being in 1850,

many escaped slaves in the north fled America to seek a safe life in Canada. At this point, she', herself,

escaped into Canada in 1851 with many of her family and settled in St. Catharines , Ontario. Putting

down roots in St. Catharines was a reasonable choice: it was close enough to the U.S. border, but far

many of the former slaves she had helped escape, making-it a reasonable choice.

Harriet settled in a home on North Street, and continued her work including volunteering with the

helped former slaves adjust to their new Life in Canada, She continued with her work helping slaves'

through the Underground Railroad to safety. It was in her st. Catharines home in 1868, that she first

spoke with the famous abolitionist（废奴主义者），John Brown and agreed to help him gather former

slaves for the famous sudden attack on Harper's Ferry, Virginia. It had been her intention to be there

herself for it, but illness came upon her and she was unable to join them. In 1859, Abraham Lincoln's

future Secretary of State, William Henry Seward, sold Harriet a home in Aubum, New York. Once back

in the United States, Harriet worked with the Union Army during the Civil War and died in 19j3. She

was often referred to as "Moses" by her people, for helping them to gain freedom.

An extraordinary two minute film appeared on YouTube and immediately became an international

phenomenon. It shows the moving reunion of two young men and their pet lion Christian, after they had

left him in Africa with George Adamson to introduce him into his rightful home in the wild.

A Lion, Called Christian, tells the remarkable story of how Anthony Ace Bourke and John Rendall,

visitors to London from Australia in 1969, bought the baby lion in the pet department of Harrods. For

several months, the three of them shared a flat above a furniture shop on London's King's Road, where

the intelligent Christian quickly became famous locally, walking in the streets, appearing for lunch at a

local restaurant, even posing for a fashion advertisement. But the baby lion was growing up-fast-and

soon even the walled church garden where he went for exercise wasn't large enough for him. How could

Ace and John avoid having to send Christian to a zoo for the rest of his life? A meeting by accident with

English actors Virgirua.McKenna and Bill Travers, stars of the hit film Born Free, led to Christian being

flown to Kenya and placed under the expert care of "the father of lions" George Adamson. Implausibly,

when Ace and John returned to Kenya to see Christian a year later, they received a loving welcome from

their lion, who was by then fully integrated (融入) into Africa and a life with other lions.
