Ⅲ. 阅读理解(共 20 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 50 分)

A

“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression.

When my friend Maxie says “have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely

cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person

cares about me and wishes me well.

“Have a nice day next!” this version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl

at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words

come out in the same tone with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to

me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the

management’s attempt to increase business.

The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each

other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you

know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expressions save us when we

don’t know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I am terrible sorry, but

have a nice day.”

The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “have a nice day” to you,

you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be

nice to you.

Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at

times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it’s a little

uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others

who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange

and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care

when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be

sincere, it’s always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they

like.

36. How does the author understand Maxi’s words?

A. Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.

B. Maxie really wishes the author a good day.

C. Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.

D. Maxie really worries about the author’s security.

37. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. The salesgirl is rude.

B. The salesgirl is bored.

C. The salesgirl cares about me.

D. The salesgirl says the words as a routine.

38. By saying “Have a nice day” a stranger may _______.

A. try to be polite to you B. express respect to you

C. give his blessing to you D. share his pleasure with you

39. According to the last paragraph, people say “Have a nice day”_______.

A. sincerely B. as thanks C. as a habit D. encouragingly

40. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Have a Nice Day—a Social Custom

B. Have a Nice Day—a Pleasant Gesture

C. Have a Nice Day—a Heart-warming Greeting

D. Have a Nice Day—a Polite Ending of a Conversation

B

Few laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take

effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled—to

$1.01 per pack—smokers have jammed telephone “quit lines” across the

country seeking to kick the habit.

This is not a surprise to public health advocates. They’ve studied the effect

of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price

sensitive. Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase.

The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the

message. Tobacco taxes improve public health, they raise money and most

particularly, they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when

nearly all smokers are addicted. Yet the rate of taxation varies widely.

In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of

Marlboro Light Kings cost $10.06 at one drugstore Wednesday. Charleston, S, C.,

where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is the lowest in the nation, the price was $4. 78.

The influence is obvious.

In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys—13.8%,

far below the national average. By comparison, 26% of high school students

smoke in Kentucky. Other low-tax states have similarly depressing teen-smoking

records.

Hal Rogers, Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high

tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low-income Americans

“who choose to smoke.”

That’s true. But there is more reason in keeping future generations of lowincome

workers from getting hooked in the first place. As for today’s adults, if

the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut

their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.

41. The text is mainly about ________.

A. the price of cigarettes B. tie rate of teen smoking

C. the effect of tobacco tax increase D. the differences in tobacco tax rate

42. What does the author think is a surprise?

A. Teen smokers are price sensitive.

B. Some states still keep the tobacco tax low.

C. Tobacco taxes improve public health.

D. Tobacco industry fiercely fights the tax rise.

43. The underlined word “deter” in Paragraph 3 most probably means __.

A. discarding B. remove C. benefit D. free

44. Rogers’ attitude towards the low-income smokers might be that of .

A. tolerance B. unconcern C. doubt D. sympathy

45. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. The new tax will be beneficial in the long run.

B. Low-income Americans are mor
