Well, that’s exactly how I felt. On a Saturday morning last autumn.I had gone to town to do some shopping and as I was on my way home,it suddenly began to rain. I at once ran into a nearby phone box because I didn’t have an umbrella. It was raining so heavily that I have to stay in the phone box until it stopped.

I had to wave my hands about and acted as if I was deep in conversation.

Luckily,it began to stop after about ten minutes.“Okay,Mum,” I said loudly into the phone,“I’ll see you later Bye!” I put the phone down, picked up my shopping bag and walked out of the phone box “I’m sorry I took so long,”I said to the man.

“Oh, I don’t want to use the phone,”he replied, smiling.“I’ve just come to repair it. It’s out of order.you see.” I felt myself go red in the face and I hurried away with my head down, feeling a complete fool. That was certainly one of the most embarrassing moments of my life!

When my brother and I were children, we spent a few weeks each summer in the countryside with our uncle. He was a geologist and loved to go on long walks to find stones to add to his collection at the university. More often than not, we followed him.

One day, we left early, and this time, our uncle had bought us backpacks. “You can help me carry the?samples?,” he explained.

Sure, why not? The whole day, we walked around the countryside, and every now and then, our uncle put stones in our bags. We were a bit surprised that he also took some stones out from our bags at times, but?figured?he had just found better samples than the ones we already had.

Still, when we reached the house in the late afternoon, we were?exhausted. The backpacks were so heavy we gave a big?sigh?of?relief?when we put them on the ground. Yet our uncle’s backpack was half-empty.

“Why did you give us so many stones?” we asked.

“I didn’t. You did,” he said, waiting for a while before continuing. “You did not know it, but I made you go through a little attitude test today.”

“What do you mean an ‘attitude test’?” we wanted to know.

“It is something someone once did to me – and I shall always remember it. You see, I listened to every word you said. And whenever you complained about anyone or anything, I added a stone to your bags. And whenever you talked about something with an attitude of?gratitude and?positive?thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks.”

We did. They were full.

“I hope you remember this little attitude test. You see, your?negative thoughts are like stones. You carry them in your mind just like those stones in a backpack. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind is. A positive thought, however,?cancels out?a negative one. So look at those bags and start paying attention to what you say and how you say things.”

This little lesson was one of the most important I ever had. And I remember my uncle with great love for teaching us one of the most important lessons in life – the power of attitude.

8.What did the author and his brother often do when staying with their uncle in the countryside?

A. They often followed him to collect stones.

B. They often followed him to his university.

C. They often studied his collection of stones with him.

D. They often took long walks to enjoy nature.

9. When the author and his brother returned home late in the afternoon, ______.

A. they were tired but happy that they had helped their uncle

B. they wished more stones had been taken out

C. they found that their bags were filled with stones

D. they were angry to find their uncle’s bag half-empty

10. How did the uncle explain the attitude test to the author?

A. By giving examples. B. By asking questions.

C. By using famous sayings. D. By comparing negative thoughts to stones.

11. This article is mainly written to tell us that ______.

A. we should show gratitude to those who help us

B. we should watch the language we use

C. we should learn from older people

D. we should stop and think about our lives from time to time

D

You may know the difference between an American accent and a British accent. But do you know what a “posh” (优雅的) British accent is? The difference may be more important than you think.

There are many different accents in the UK, some of them very difficult for foreigners to understand. In the south, many people speak with what is known as a “posh” accent, an accent that makes people think of the British Royal Family and upper-class people in the UK. In this accent, “grass” sounds more like “gr-ar-ss”, and “bath” sounds more like “barth”. Often, British people who take jobs on TV or elsewhere have to change their own accents and make them “posher” to be accepted.

So, do accents still matter? Last year Alexander Baratta, PhD, from the UK’s University of Manchester spoke about “accentism” – people being treated worse because of how they speak – and compared it to racism, according to The Guardian. In a study, he asked people why they changed their accents and how it made them feel.

It’s not hard to see why they do it – everyone wants to do well in life, and the best way to do that is to “fit in”. Still, there is a price to pay, Baratta said. Facing the world with a voice that is not your own can hurt “your sense of being”. This was shown when a third of those questioned said they were “ashamed” about changing their accents.

What can be done to stop people changing how they sound? Well, times may be changing, too. The Guardian’s leader writer Hugh Muir has a suggestion: “The listener must adapt when needed. The speaker must make themselves understood, whatever accent they choose.”

So as you’re learning English, don’t worry too much about how your accent makes you sound – as long as it’s clear what you’re saying!

12.What is the article mainly about?

A. How we should deal with different accents.

B. Why we should learn a posh British accent.

C. The problem of accentism and ways to deal with it.

D. Why some British people like to change their accents.

13. According to the article, a posh accent reminds people of ______ in the UK.

A. working-class people B. upper-class people

C. poorly-educated people D. fashionable young people

14. We can see from the article that changing their accents ______.

A. made most of the people asked feel posh

B. meant that some of the people asked were treated worse

C. made some of the people asked feel bad about themselves

D. made most of the people asked feel unsure of themselves

15. What are people advised to do with their accents?

A. To make themselves clear in the accent they choose.

B. To warn listeners to accept different accents.

C. To make no changes to their accent at all.

D. To adapt their accent to their listeners.
