Camp Wicosuta is a traditional four-week sleepaway camp for girls in Hebron, New Hampshire. At Camp Wicosuta, girls develop confidence and self-esteem (自尊) by learning and developing new skills, making new friends, and having the time of their lives! At Camp Wicosuta, everything we do is centered on your daughter’s physical and emotional safety. As educators, we understand what it takes for young girls to learn and grow both individually and within a group. ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SLEEPAWAY CAMPS Camp Wicosuta was founded in 1920 by Anna Rothman, one of the pioneers of sleepaway camps for girls. Mrs. Rothman knew that by getting young women out of urban areas and into the natural environment surrounded by caring role models and energetic friends, they would learn many of the lessons needed for them to get ahead in the world around them. THE “3 C’S”: CONFIDENCE, COMPETENCE & COMMUNITY Camp Wicosuta teaches young girls skills that build self-confidence and self-esteem. At Wico, our goal is for every child to walk away feeling confident of herself and competent in her ability in any of a number of areas. We teach these lessons in a physically and emotionally safe community in which our campers are challenged to move past their self-set limits. An exhibition guide B We all know what a brain is. A doctor will tell you that the brain is the organ of the body in the head. It controls our body’s functions, movements, emotions and thoughts. But a brain can mean so much more. A brain can also simply be a smart person. If a person is called brainy, she is smart and intelligent. If a family has many children but one of them is super smart, you could say “She’s the brains in the family.”. And if you are the brains behind something you are responsible for developing or organizing something. For example, Bill Gates is the brains behind Microsoft. Brain trust is a group of experts who give advice. Word experts say the phrase “brain trust” became popular when Franklin D. Roosevelt first ran for president in 1932. Several professors gave him advice on social and political issues facing the U.S. These professors were called his “brain trust.” These ways we use the word “brain” all make sense. But other ways we use the word are not so easy to understand. For example, to understand the next brain expression, you first need to know the word “drain”. As a verb, to drain means to remove something by letting it flow away. So a brain drain may sound like a disease where the brain flows out the ears. But, brain drain is when a country’s most educated people leave their countries to live in another. The brains are, sort of, draining out of the country. However, if people are responsible for a great idea, you could say they brainstormed it. Here, brainstorm is not an act of weather. It is a process of thinking creatively about a complex topic. For example, business leaders may use brainstorming to create new products, and government leaders may brainstorm to solve problems. If people are brainwashed, it does not mean their brains are nice and clean. To brainwash means to make someone accepts new beliefs by using repeated pressure in a forceful or tricky way. Keep in mind that brainwash is never used in a positive way. 24. Why did Roosevelt successfully win the election? Because word experts were popular. B. Because he got his brain trust. C. Because he was smart at giving advice. D. Because he was the brains behind American. 25. According to the text, if you’re the CEO of Bai Du you can be called_______ . the organ of the Bai Du B.the brain drain of Bai Du C.the brains behind the Bai Du D. Bai Du’s brain trust 26. Which of the following expression is always used in a negative way? Brainstorm B. Brain trust C. Brainwash D. Brain drain 27. What’s the main idea of this article? A. The origin of the word “brain”. B. The word “brain” and its stories. C. What is the brain. D. The difference between “brain trust” and “brainwashed”. C Once, a peasant exhausted by illnesses and burdens of life came to a wise man. He sat in front of the wise man who gave him a social and warm smile, and breathed out heavily, letting out a wave of mourning. He began complaining that he had a hard burden and that he didn’t see the bright daylight at all. It seemed that one problem fell on his head after another. They had twisted (扭曲) him so much that he couldn’t even breathe in some fresh air. Later, he began blaming all of his relatives, who, in his opinion, were guilty for his misfortune. The wise man listened to him in silence, and when the peasant once again inquired why it was so unfair, what he should do and how to find peace, the wise man got up from his seat and invited the peasant to follow him. They came out of the hut and went to a lakeside, which was not far away and where from time to time flying fishes were jumping fast above the surface, catching food. The wise man led the peasant to the lakeside and said to him, “You see the smoothness of the lake? The depths are full of life. There are fishes that always stay in water, and if suddenly the lake gets polluted, they can’t see further than their own noses. They will hardly recognize where the source of pollution is, and they will keep swimming in circles. And there are also fishes that get wings and they can rise above the water of the lake, looking at it from the height of their flight. So this is my advice: in | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
