To get the most from all you do, you must be in control of your time. Your success in high school depends on your use of time. Here are some important things to remember. Begin each term by filling in a master plan. First fill in things you must do (classes, work, practice, etc. that you can't change). Then find the most effective use for these times. Set a regular time and place for study. This will save you time in the long run. If you have a study hall in your school, use itT Use daylight hours to study whenever possible. For most people for every hour of study done in daylight hours, it will take them one and a half hours to do the same task at night. Take breaks. Don't plan marathon study time. Have a short rest before you study again. By using flash cards or summary sheets, you can use odd times to study while you are waiting for class to start or for a friend to pick you up. lf possible, plan study time with a partner. Choose your partner wisely however. Make sure you study, not socialize yourself. Do the most difficult tasks when you are active. (Take math for example: when you're energetic, it will become easier to solve; when you're tired, it will be impossible!) Make a daily checklist. Do the most important tasks first. 21. According to the passage, your success in high school mainly lies in A. making full use of your time B. your hard work C. your brain power D. how well you play the game 22. We should use daylight hours to study whenever possible because A. school study halls are open to students only in the daytime B. most people can spare more time to study in the daytime C. it's more difficult to study effectively at night D. we have more important things to do than study at night 23. On how to use our time, we should follow the following suggestions EXCEPT A. working out a complete plan for the whole term B. keeping a good balance between study and rest C. putting the most important tasks first D. trying to study alone instead of working with others B I spent three months volunteering with Volunteer Bolivia(玻利维亚) . It was sometimes annoying, scary and difficult, but also life-changing, satisfying and amazing. Because I had studied Spanish for a couple of years before I went out, I had just one week of classes at Volunteer Bolivia. Living with a family also helped my Spanish greatly and l felt immediately like one of their daughters. We were good friends from the beginning of my time there and I was looked after very well. I still had a lot of independence. The Volunteer Bolivia centre, with its cafe bar and cultural talks, was a meeting place for all the volunteers and I met some wonderful people from all over the world who were doing the same as me-giving something of themselves to a country which needs so much. My job was in a caring centre for prisoners' children from the Cochabamba prisons and from the very(昀) start I felt welcomed and needed. There I met some inspiring members who put so much of their heart into caring for those children who maybe had no one else to love them. Not only the work itself was very hard but at times it was emotionally demanding, especially sending a group of two-year-olds back into the prison at the end of the day. Despite all this, I learnt a lot through the experience and now I'm more aware of the problems faced daily by many people in South America. The centre has very limited funding c贸金) so they depend heavily on the work of volunteers, and any time people give is very valuable to them. Since returning to Britain I have kept in touch with the people I worked with and I'm trying to support them as much as possible. Volunteering through Volunteer Bolivia has changed my life and is an experience l will never forget. 24. We can infer that the official language of Bolivia is most probably _ A. English B. Spanish C. French D. ltalian 25. Where did the author stay when she was in Bolivia? A. In a hotel. B. In the volunteer centre. C. In a cafe bar. D. In a local family. 26. The author's job as a volunteer in Bolivia was to A. raise money for some prisons B. meet volunteers from other countries C. look after some prisoners' children D. help the local people with their farm work 27. What did the author think of her work in Bolivia according to Paragraph 3? A. Challenging. B. Relaxing. C. Disappointing. D. Boring. C "Plants were expected to get larger with increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but changes in temperature, humidity and nutrient availability seem to have trumped the benefits of increased carbon dioxide," said researchers from the National University of Singapore. 45 percent of the species studied now reach smaller adult sizes than they did in the past. The researchers pointed out that warmer temperatures and changing habitats, caused by climate change, are possible reasons for shrinking creatures. “We do not yet know the mechanisms involved, or why some organism are getting smaller while others are unaffected," the researchers said. 6eUntil we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we can't yet quantify. " The change was big in cold-blooded animals. Only two decades of warmer temperatures were enough to make reptiles (爬行动物) smaller. An increase of 1 degree centigrade caused nearly a 10 percent increase in metabolism (新陈代谢) . Greater use of energy resulted in tiny tortoises and little lizards. Fish are smaller now too. Though overfishing has played a part in reducing numbers, experiments show that warmer temperatures also stop fish growth. There is a recent report on warmer temperatures' negative effects on plankton (浮游生物), the base of the marine ecosystem. Warm-blooded animals weren't immune from the size change caused by climate change. Many birds are now smaller. Mammals have been miniaturized too. Soay sheep are thinner. Red deer are weaker. And polar bears are smaller, compared with historical records. This is not the first time this has happened in Earth's history. 55 million years ago, a warming event similar to the current climate change caused bees, spiders and ants to shrink by 50 to -5 percent over several thousand years. That event happened over a longer time than the current climate change. The speed of modern climate change could mean organisms may not respond or adapt quickly enough, especially those with long generation times. So, it is likely that more negative influences of climate change will be shown in future. 28.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
