Charles, Goodyear, the owner of a rubber company, was trying to create a waterproof(防水的)mailbag for the postal service. People’s mail got wet whenever it rained, so Goodyear was trying to make a canvas bag that was covered in rubber. But the rubber always fell off easily since it was either too soft of too hard. Discouraged by his failed attempts, one day Goodyear shook a spoonful of sticky rubber, and a small drop of it landed on the hot stove. When he got the rubber off the stove, he realized the heat had changed it. The rubber was now strong and flexible. Goodyear’s discovery not only helped him make his canvas and rubber mailbag, it also led to the invention of canvas shoes with rubber soles (鞋底)that we call sneakers.

When a new brand called Keds hit the market in 1917, the name “sneakers” was born. Other shoes at this time were still clunky, so they made a lot of noise as people walked. But the rubber soles on Keds made it possible for people to walk very quietly. Wearing these noiseless shoes, a person could pass by without being heard.

For many years, people wore sneakers only when playing sports. Sneakers became part of the youth culture. A famous actor named James Dean was photographed wearing sneakers, jeans, and a white T-shirt. Teenagers everywhere wanted to copy the look. Wearing sneakers was a way for young people to express themselves. Pretty soon, sneakers weren’t just for the playing field or the tennis court. People wore them just about anywhere: to school, the office, and even parties.

Why was it difficult to make a waterproof mailbag?

A. The rubber had to be heated to a very high temperature.

B. There was not enough canvas at that time.

C. It took a lot of money to make such a bag.

D. Sticking the rubber onto the canvas was not easy.

The underlined word “clunky” in Paragraph2 could best be replaced by “_______”.

A. ugly B. strong C. cheap D. heavy

In the 1950s, teenagers’ attitude towards sneakers might be __________.

A. doubtful B. cautious C. uninterested D. positive

The main purpose of the text is to _____________.

A. stress the importance of shoes B. tell the story of sneakers

C. introduced Charles Goodyear D. show how a mailbag was made

B

My friend Mike was shaking his head in disbelief. "That young woman who just waited on me," he said, pointing to an employee of the fast food restaurant where we were eating, "had to call someone over to help her count change. The cash register (收银机) showed her I needed 99 cents, but she couldn't figure out how to count out the coins." I understood Mike's concern. What we have done is to create several generations of individuals most of whom have no idea how to reason; how to do simple math; how to do research; or, finally, how to be creative . The reason for this is our overuse of information technology: video games, television, digital watches, calculators, and computers. Information technology feeds us information without requiring us to think about it and let us perform operations without understanding them.

It is time we took a hard look at an educational system that only teaches our children how to push buttons. Our kids can't tell time if the clock has hands. They can use calculators, but cannot add, subtract(减), divide, or multiply. Video games have taken the place of active, imaginative play. Although most of them are technically educated, they choose not to read. They are so used to television and movies that they cannot use their imagination to stay interested in a book.

Therefore, we must do something to help our children. If we don't, they will never learn how to solve problems. They will never learn even basic reasoning skills and will certainly not develop creativity. Instead of filling classrooms with electronics, let's concentrate on good old-fashioned literacy ― reading books. Students must see how things work and how processes lead to results, and they must also stretch their imagination.

What was the employee’s problem?

A. She couldn’t operate the cash register.

B. She forgot to count change.

C. She couldn’t solve simple math problems.

D. She was in need of coins for customer.

According to the text, Mike worries that ___________.

A. information technology is developing too fast.

B. many restaurants do not provide good service

C. we are creating people who cannot think for themselves

D. modern technology feeds us with too much information

What’s probably the author’s suggestion about children’s problem?

A. To get them off TV and computer games.

B. To teach them how to learn from video games.

C. To turn off all electronic equipment at school.

D. To give them freedom in the use of computers.

We can learn from the text that the author believes __________.

A. calculators help children expand their imagination

B. reading benefits children more than electronics do

C. there’s no place for electronics in the classroom

D. information technology does us a lot of good

The Lumière brothers, Auguste and Louis, were son of well-known artist Antoine Lumière. Both of them had a natural talent for science and were educated at Lyon’s largest technical school, La Martiniere.[:]

Antoine was often up to date with the latest developments in the photography industry of those times. Assisted by his sons, he started a business that produced and sold photographic equipment. In 1881, young Louis developed a dry-plate (干版)technique for still-photography. Soon afterwards a factory was built to produce the plates.

By 1894 the Lumières were producing around 15,000,000 plates a year. Antoine, by now a successful businessman, was invited to watch how Thomas Edison’s Peephole Kinetoscope worked It was actually an early movie camera. Upon his return with a copy of the Kinetoscope’s film.Antoine encouraged his son’s to work on developing a cheaper alternative.

The brothers worked through the winter of 1894. They recognized two main problems with Edison’s invention: the Kinetograph was a large piece of machinery, which resigned it to the workroom; the viewer (底片看片器)meant that only one person could experience the films at a time. Within a year, the Cinematographe was born. It was much smaller and could be viewed by larger audiences.

Louis came up with a new design for moving the film inside their Cinematoscope. He was inspired by the irregular movement of a sewing machine, as it would allow each frame to be stationary (停止的)just long enough. To achieve this, he created tiny holes along the sides of the film strip(胶卷), and using a short thin piece of wire, he fastened the film to the machine’s motor. A continuous display of frames would then give the illusion (错觉)of movement.

Their first film was Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory, which showed workers at their fact
