My parents moved to Mississippi when my brother and I were small children, and we were separated from our Oklahoma grandparents by some 600 miles. This geographic distance allowed us to only visit our grandparents once a year, either at Christmas or during summer vacation.

Most of my classmates lived near their grandparents, and I would routinely hear stories of extended families(大家庭)regularly spending time with one another, fishing at “grandpa’s” house or going over to “grandma’s” for her famous fried chicken. We were disappointed that we did not get to spend more time with our grandparents, but our love for them remained deep and strong.

We always expected a road trip to Oklahoma. We would count the days, and when Day I came, the entire family would pile into the car at four o’clock in the morning. Crossing the Mississippi River into Louisiana, the landscapes (风景)changed. Crossing the Red River in Oklahoma, we were in a foreign world.

Every trip to see my grandparents can’t be without bringing delight. We jumped out of the car in their driveway to be met with bear hugs. My grandparents wanted to know everything about their grandchildren, and we would sit for hours and tell story after story. Grandma had a meal planned, and you could bet she fixed her grandsons’ favorite foods. Of course the best part of the visit was that we were able to do whatever we wanted without punishment from our grandparents. Grandma and Grandpa always had presents for us, neat scenic trips planned and lovely surprises, such as the time we got to go to a local restaurant and eat the world’s largest hamburger.

A. were all full of great excitement B. found they were in a foreign world

24.What can we infer from the author’s story?

A. Distance can’t break the bond of love.

B. Physical separation hurts the heart deeply.

C. Distance leads to the most beautiful scene.

D. Family life is filled with love and understanding.

Traveling to Europe to see its famous monuments is not exactly the ideal vacation for kids. You can enjoy some fun in the sun at some of the famous beaches of the continent.[:.]

Mykonos, Greece

The closer you get to the equator, the longer the beach season, and Greece is wonderful for that. You can enjoy beautiful green water, public chairs and lovely umbrellas at the beaches in Mykonos.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

There’s nothing more attractive than the beautiful beaches bordering Dubrovnik — Croatia’s most beautiful city. It’s surrounded by stone walls, like a castle. It almost makes you feel like you’re suntanning(晒黑皮肤)at Hogwarts, where the hero Harry Potter of the story is trained!

Sicily, Italy

Rabbit beach on the island of Sicily offers shallow, crystal clear waters, making it the perfect beach for families with young children. And if you want to add interest to your experience, try snorkeling (潜游).

Nice, France

Lined with palm trees and first—class hotels, the city of Nice, located on the French Riviera, offers a whole coastline of Mediterranean beaches. Because they’re in the heart of the city, these beaches attract a large crowd. So if you’re looking for something more private, you’ll have to travel a few miles outside of the city center.

Ribadeo, Spain

At low tide, Playa de las Catedrales in Ribadeo, Spain is the perfect beach to take in the natural wonders without urban amusements like restaurants, bars or huge crowds. It is proud of its beautiful wildflowers and unique rock formations, making it truly picture worthy.

A Swiss airplane powered only by energy from the sun left from Abu Dhabi early on March 9. Its creators hope the plane will make the first around—the—world journey without any fuel. The plane is called Solar Impulse 2. It has one seat and is made from carbon fiber. The plane weighs only as much as a car but its wings are wider than a Boeing 747. The plane’s wings stretch 72 meters across. Those wings include 17,000 solar units or cells that catch the sun’s energy. The energy allows the plane to fly day and night.

Two Swiss scientists built the plane. Bertrand Piccard is also an explorer who made the first non—stop flight around the world in a balloon, while Borschberg is an engineer and has trained fighter pilots.

The scientists say they are not trying to change the airplane industry. Instead, they want to show that new energy sources and technologies can achieve what some say is impossible. “We want to show that we can fly day and night in an aircraft without a drop of fuel,” Mr. Piccard said. Some parts of the trip will require the pilots to be in the tiny plane for five to six days and nights in a row. So it is good that the pilot’s seat is also a toilet.

The plane’s route begins in the United Arab Emirates. The pilots also plan stops in Oman, India, and China (the first stop in Chongqing, and then in Nanjing). They will cross the Pacific Ocean, stop in the United States, and continue over southern Europe or North Africa. They plan to arrive back in the United Arab Emirates in late July or early August.

Internet viewers can go to the Solar Impulse website to see the plane’s location and listen to broadcasts from the pilots.

28. How long will the flight last?

A. About three months. B. About four months.

C. About five months. D. About half a year.

29. The plane’s wings are made so wide in order to ________.

A. fly more smoothly B. get enough energy

C. look more beautiful D. make sure of its safety

30. The scientists have made Solar Impulse 2 to _______.

A. cut the cost of making a plane

B. go on a tour around the world

C. show their ability in science and technology

D. prove it’s possible to fly with solar energy only

31. What is the best title for the text?

A. A long flight without fuel

B. The first solar—powered plane

C. Solar—powered plane starts its world tour

D. A plane with the longest wings in the world

You asked us why people don’t smile in old photographs. Technology is partly to blame. The Daguerreotype, the first widely used photographic process, was invented in 1839. The exposure time in those early days was really long, sometimes lasting up to 15 minutes or so — a way too long to hold a smile. But that timing was cut down pretty quickly, so there was more at play here than just the tech.

Although it was less expensive than having you painted, getting your picture taken still wasn’t cheap. Some people had just one photo taken their whole entire life. That made the event a pretty important and formal deal. Unlike portrait(人像)painters, photographers weren’t trying to catch an instant in their subjects' lives, but more of an ideal of that person. Plus, back in the day, people just didn’t say “cheese”.

It wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century when cameras became portable and easier to use that pictures turned into casual snapshots(快照), and smiles became more common. Now, we can’t get enough of those pearly whites.

I think they did not care if they smiled as long as they got to take the picture since it was expensive.

I always wondered why people didn’t smile in old photos. Finally I know that answer to it by reading this article. Thank goodness that we don’t have to wait fifteen minutes to take a picture any more. Now we can take a picture easily and have a pretty smile on our face.

★ Submitted by Jacobf

In 1839, people didn’t smile because the exposure time would sometimes last up to fifteen minutes. Due to the new camera’s efficiency(效率), people smiled more often. I love the new cameras. They are a cool way to capture a moment in my life.

32. When taking photos in 1839, people _______.

A. had little time to smile B. failed to keep on smiling

C. didn’t know how to smile D. were too scared to show a smile

33. What can be inferred about taking photos long time ago?

A. It was cheap. B. People didn’t pose for it.

C. People took it seriously. D. It aimed to reflect the subjects’ lives.

34. By “Now, we can’t get enough of those pearly whites”, the author means ________.

A. now there’s still lack of smiles in photos

B. now more people are smiling in photos

C. now taking photos is more common for people
