Today, we will begin our tour of Death Valley. You are about to experience the hottest desert on earth! That’s right — the highest temperature ever recorded was right here, in Death valley, in 1913. It was 134 degrees! The weather report says it should be as high as 120 degrees today. But it is enough to bake you, if you aren’t careful.

Now I want everyone here to look into your backpacks to see if you have everything you need. I’ll go down the list. If you’re missing anything, let one of our staff members know. First, make sure you have a gallon of water. It’s heavy, but it’s necessary. We will pick up more water in a few hours at our resting point. Next, check if your bag includes sun block, a hat, and a small towel. The towel can be used to protect either your head or your neck from the strong sun. And finally, see that you bring one of those walkie-talkies that we handed out yesterday. Those are like cell phones, so we can find each other if anyone gets lost in the desert.
