A

Animals can be extremely protective of their young. But when hard times come, animal fathers can be really a danger to their own kids.

Daddy Lion

A combination of laziness, pride, cruel and anger makes the lion one of the most fearsome and worst dads of the animal kingdom. When not walking proudly across the jungle, the father lion just lazes around under the sun, or waits for one of its lioness (母狮子)partners to bring back food. Once the lioness gets home the food, the lion eats up most of it, and leaves little or nothing at all for the kids. The father doesn’t even train the kids for hunting and surviving, it is the lioness who teaches them how to fend for themselves.

The Polar Father

Cute, pure and soft. Protective to young ones and family? Sure. But what makes the polar bears one of the worst dads of the animal kingdom? They don’t take care of the young ones, they won’t take up the responsibility of feeding them, they won’t take care of them like a father should. They just leave that to the mother bear.

The Assassin Bug (猪蝽)

Size matters, you say? This little bug would eat its own eggs to stay strong and fulfill its hunger needs. The male assassin bug is actually responsible for guarding the eggs. The female assassin bug lays eggs in large numbers. The male bug eats the weaker eggs.

Daddy Bass (岩鲈鱼)

Usually, water calms you down. Not so much for this underwater species. The male bass is known to eat up eggs from its own spawn (子,卵). It guards the spawn laid by its female parter. However, when hungry and unalbe to hunt for food, the father won’t think twice before eating up the eggs.

And do you think your father was strict and hard? After reading this article, I’m sure you think your dad is the best in the whole wide world for not eating you up!

The animal fathers mentioned in this article ________.

A. are rather bad to their kids B. are respected by their young

C. are protective of their young D. are dangerous to their whole family

The underlined phrase “fend for” (Para 2) probably means ________.

fight for B. learn from C. look for D. look after

The lion and the polar bears are similar in ________.

searching food all by themselves

wanting to train the kids to be cruel

letting the mothers to eat up the food

letting the mothers to take care of the kids

B

Citizen Reporters Make the News

In the West, people with a journalistic trend turn to weblogs to exercise the urge to publish news or comment on events of the day.

But in South Korea, the publishing instinct is directed toward a big, collaborative (合作的) online newspaper that appeared as one of the country’s most influential media outlets.

OhmyNews is a unique experiment in “citizen journalism”: Anyone who registers with the site can become a paid reporter.

“ With OhmyNews, we wanted to say goodbye to 20th-century journalism where people only saw things through the eyes of the mainstream, conservative media,” said editor and founder, Oh Yeonho, “ Our main concept is every citizen can be a reporter. We put everything out there and people judge the truth by themselves.”

Launched three years ago, OhmyNews has grown from a staff of four to more than 40 editors and reporters who publish about 200 stories a day. The vast majority of the news, however, is written by more than 26,000 registered citizen journalists, who come from all walks of life.

The site attracts an estimated 2 million daily readers, and has been widely trusted with helping to elect South Korea’s new progressive president, Roh Moo-hyun. The Guardian newspaper called OhmyNews “ the world’s most domestically powerful news site”.

OhmyNews was founded in 2000 by a journalist, in reaction to the country’s firm conservative media. Its intention was to publish material that would make readers sit up in exclamation, thus its name--a play on “ It my God!” It didn’t have any money. A website written by amateurs was its only option.

OhmyNews tends to be anti-government and anti-American. The site covers everything a traditional newspaper covers---from sports to international politics---but does it with personality.

OhmyNews is a (an) ________.

web blog B. online newspaper C. report D. company

Different from traditional media, OhmyNews ________.

A. pays reporters for the articles

B. only tells truth in the newspaper

C. is published widely

D. lets ordinary people become reporters

The underlined word “ walks” in the fifth paragraph means ________.

roads B. classes C. sideways D. aspects

OhmyNews wins a wide trust so it helps ________.

A. Roh Moo-hyun become president B. people with daily deal

C. businesses a great deal D. people find jobs

C

In 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully choose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own business for years, first a theater, then a barbecue restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this minimal selection they added one new concept: quick service, no waiters or waitess, and no tips.

Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity, for the brothers had developed a strict routine. Their new drive-in became incredible popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with the modest success until they met Ray Kroc.

Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milk shake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the unique appeal of the brothers fast food restaurants and bought right to franchise (赋予许权)other copies of their restaurants. The agreement struck included the right to duplicated (复制)the menu, the equipment, even their red white building with the golden arches.

Today McDonald’s is literally a household name. Its name for its sandwiches have come to mean hamburger in the decades since the day Ray Kroc watched people rush up to order fifteen-cent hamburgers. In 1976, McDonald’s had over $1 billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years is one of the most incredible success stories in modern American business history.

This passage is mainly about ________.

the business careers of Mac and Dick McDonald

how McDonald’s became a billion-dollar business

Bay Kroc’s business abilities

the development
