Every student will be faced with the question when he passes the college entrance examinations: Should we choose a good major or a good university first? Some students prefer to consider majors first so that they can learn what they are interested in. It will also make it possible for them to take their favorite jobs in the future.

However, those who think differently believe that the environment is important to one’s development and that graduates from leading universities are often more likely to find a good job.

In my opinion, the best choice is a good major at a good university. If we cannot obtain both, the first thing to consider is a good major, because no matter where we study, we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if we try our best.

M: It really does help to study in a group. People were able to explain to me some things that I didn’t understand, and I was even able to help someone in the group with an idea that I understood.

W: Do you feel comfortable enough with the group to come next time?

M: I like the group a lot and feel comfortable with all the people there, but the subject matter is so difficult. Maths and Chinese are not my strong points.

W: You’ll do fine if you keep coming to the group. I also joined a history study group. You know, I’m not good at it.

M: A good idea to join the group. Oh, the teacher is coming up there, let’s go into the classroom.

W: Hi, Steven. How are you feeling now?

M: Hi, Emma. I’m a little tired now. My flight landed late last night. I didn’t sleep well at all.

W: Where are you and Uncle Tom staying?

M: We wanted to stay in the Starry Hotel but the rooms are fully booked. So we’re staying with Mr. Lee.

W: Mr. Lee? Your old neighbour?

M: Yes. But he is living near the Central Library now. I’ve never been to the big library before. I’d really like to go and have a look.

W: Good idea. Shall we go together this Saturday?

M: Oh, I’m afraid Dad’s taking me to Disneyland that day. What about this Friday?

W: Hmm… I have classes on Friday. What about Sunday?

M: OK. Let’s go to the Central Library then.

Good afternoon, everybody. My name is Susan. Today I am going to talk about one terrible experience that happened to me. I would never forget that day. My friends and I were in class when the classroom started to shake. Our desks and chairs shook. We were all frightened and someone cried. Then our teacher asked us to calm down and to recall the training about what to do with a sudden serious event. She asked us to go under the desks right away. Then we went under our desks. The lights kept turning on and off and the whole room was shaking. It was over in 30 seconds. As soon as the shaking stopped, we ran out of the building. The teacher asked us to go to the playground. Luckily, there weren’t any shakes any more. Then the teacher tried to call our parents to pick us up but the phone couldn’t be connected. Half an hour later, the phone went through, and the teacher called my father, and he came to take me home. What a day!
