But don’t worry. It’s not impossible. There are many ways to encourage your teen to care about those outside his immediate circle of friends. “Teens are thinking about jobs, college, and what their future might look like,” explains Michele Maidenberg, so focused on their own world.” Once teens take part in community service, however, they begin to look beyond their personal needs. They also learn first-hand about the challenges that others face, and they experience a sense of being an expert as they realize they can make a real difference to others’ lives. Not sure how to convince a teen to get away from the cellphone and into a community project? Teens will be highly involved in community service when the project or programme is in an area of their interest. “Finding something is an area of interest for them keeps them active and encouraged, ” Maidenberg says. For example, if a teen is interested in cooking, he or she could volunteer in a soup kitchen(施舍处)or bake for a project that supports families in need. Volunteer projects in your teen’s area of interest will build him or her knowledge base as well as help others. Let teens know the benefits they will get. “Give them every reason in the world to volunteer,” Maidenberg advises. She says that carrying out community service projects builds confidence. “By working with others, teens improve managerial, interpersonal and communication skills. Community service helps to approach maturity when they take a step back to see the needs of other people,” she adds. Another benefit: service hours look great on a resume(履历)! 36. According to Michelle Maidenberg, it’s hard to get teens to think beyond their immediate needs because ________________. A. they care more about their circle of friends B. they have no interest in doing anything C. they have to work hard for college D. they are facing many challenges 37. The writer mentions the benefits in the last paragraph in order to ____________. A. make teens feel much better about themselves B. encourage teens to care about their own needs C. help parents reason teens into volunteering D. get parents to do more community service 38. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Importance of Teens’ Future B. Teens and Community Service C. Teens and Parents D. The Growth of Teens B It is easy for us to tell our friends from our enemies. But can other animals to the same? Elephants can! They can use their sense of vision and smell to tell the difference between people who pose(造成)a threat and those who do not. In Kenya, researchers found that elephants react differently to clothing worn by men of the Maasai and Kamba ethnic groups. Young Maasai men spear animals and thus pose a threat to elephants; Kamba men are mainly farmers and are not a danger to elephants. In an experiment conducted by animal scientists, elephants were first presented with clean clothing or clothing that had been worn for five days by either a Maasai or a Kamba man. When the elephants detected the smell of clothing worn by a Maasai man, they moved away from the smell faster and took longer to relax than when they detected the smell of either clothing worn by Kamba men or clothing that had not been worn at all. Garment colour also plays a role, though in a different way. In the same study, when the elephants saw red clothing not worn before, they reacted aggressively toward the red clothing. The researchers believe that the elephants’ emotional reactions are due to their different interpretations of the smells and the sights. Smelling a potential danger means that a threat is nearby and the best thing to do is run away and hide. Seeing a potential threat without its smell means that risk is low. Therefore, instead of showing fear and running away, the elephants express their anger and become aggressive. 39. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true about Kamba and Maasai people? Maasai people are a threat to elephants. Kamba people raise elephants for farming. Both Kamba and Maasai people are elephant hunters. Both Kamba and Maasai people traditionally wear red clothing. 40. How did the elephants react to smell in the study? They attacked a man with the smell of new clothing. They needed time to relax when smelling something unfamiliar. They became anxious when they smelled Kamba-scented clothing. They were frightened and ran away when they smelled their enemies. 41. What is the main idea of this passage? Elephants use sight and smell to detect danger. Elephants attack people who wear red clothing. Scientists are now able to control elephants’ emotions. Some Kenyan tribes understand elephants’ emotions very well. 42. What can be inferred about the elephants’ behaviour from this passage? Elephants learn from t | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
